Rainer Adrion (born December 10, 1953 in Stuttgart ) is a German soccer coach and former soccer player .

Player career

Adrion played in his youth for VfB Stuttgart , from which he moved to SpVgg 07 Ludwigsburg in 1973 . In the 1977/78 season he played for FV Zuffenhausen . In 1978 he returned to VfB Stuttgart and initially played for the amateur team. Born in Swabia, Adrion wore the jersey of the Bundesliga team of VfB 22 times in the 1980/81 and 1981/82 seasons and scored no goals. Then Adrion was still active as a player for SpVgg Unterhaching , TSV 1860 Munich and again for FV Zuffenhausen.

Trainer and functionary career

Starts as a club coach

Already towards the end of his playing career, Adrion gained experience as a coach for FV Zuffenhausen . He then became head coach at SpVgg 07 Ludwigsburg , with which in its debut season 1988/89 was champion in the Association League Württemberg and rose to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg . At the German amateur championship in 1991 Adrion reached the final with Ludwigsburg. For the 1991/92 season Adrion took over the post of head coach at SpVgg Unterhaching and won the championship in his first season there in the Bayern League and rose to the 2nd Bundesliga . Before the start of the league season in 1993/94 Adrion was the head coach of SSV Reutlingen 05 , which he left on April 23, 1994. In the 1994/95 season Adrion qualified with VfR Pforzheim as a runner-up in the major league for the promotion round to the Regionalliga Süd . After a 4-0 semi-final win against SpVgg Bayreuth , Adrion and Pforzheim failed in the final of the promotion round with a 3-1 defeat against the amateur team from Eintracht Frankfurt .

Loew's assistant coach and, for the first time, U-23 coach at VfB Stuttgart

In 1996 he became Joachim Löw's assistant coach at VfB Stuttgart . As Löw's assistant, he won the DFB Cup with VfB in 1996/97 and reached the final in the 1997/98 European Cup Winners' Cup . Adrion became head coach of the first team at VfB on January 1, 1999. He was supposed to straighten up the team threatened with relegation and also install the game system of his designated successor Ralf Rangnick . After poor results under Adrion, which increased the risk of relegation even further, Rangnick was prematurely head coach on May 3, 1999, after his previous club SSV Ulm 1846 had given him the early release. Adrion then took over the second team at VfB Stuttgart. In the DFB-Pokal 2000/01 he managed a 6-1 win against the Bundesliga team of Eintracht Frankfurt in the first round with the then still called amateurs second representation of VfB .

Intermediate stops in Unterhaching and at the Kickers and return to VfB Stuttgart II

After intermediate positions from September 13, 2001 to April 2, 2002 in the 2nd Bundesliga with SpVgg Unterhaching and from March 10, 2003 to October 27, 2003 in the Regionalliga Süd with the Stuttgarter Kickers , Adrion returned to VfB Stuttgart as a coach the second team back.

With Sami Khedira , Mario Gómez , Serdar Tasci and Christian Gentner , Adrion trained several later national players in the regional league team who were involved in the German championship title of the Bundesliga team in 2007. In the regional league season 2006/07 Adrion reached third place with VfB Stuttgart II despite the loss of these players. In the 2007/08 season he again achieved the best non-promotion position with VfB II and qualified with the second team from Stuttgart for the newly founded 3rd soccer league .

German U-21 national coach

From July 1, 2009, Adrion coached the U-21 national team of Germany , previously supervised by Horst Hrubesch , which had previously won the U-21 European Football Championship in 2009 . He had been a member of the DFB coaching staff since June 1, 2009.

In 2010 Adrion missed qualifying for the U-21 European Football Championship 2011 in Denmark with the U-21 . The team failed because of the teams from the Czech Republic and Iceland.

The German team qualified for the U-21 European Championship in Israel in 2013 , but retired prematurely after defeats in the first two group games. Adrion, who was criticized for the composition of the squad and a weak offensive, ruled out a resignation. Players like Draxler , Gündoğan , Schürrle , Götze and Toni Kroos had to leave Adrion to the senior team, the last two were injured anyway. With Beister (five goals) and Esswein (four) Adrion had not nominated two of the top scorers in the qualification. He was released from his job on June 21, 2013, and was succeeded by his predecessor Horst Hrubesch.

Return to Stuttgart

On July 1, 2014, Rainer Adrion returned to VfB Stuttgart as Sports Director U17 to U23. In March 2020 he was appointed to the VfB Supervisory Board.
