Valentin Stocker (born April 12, 1989 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss football player . His preferred position is the left midfield. He has been under contract with FC Basel since January 10, 2018 .

Career

youth

Stocker began his career at SC Kriens , for whose youth teams he played from 1996 to December 2005.

FC Basel

From January 2006 he played for the U-21 team of FC Basel. In the summer of 2007 he was promoted to the professional team of FC Basel, with whom he became Swiss champions in the 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons and Swiss cup winners in 2008, 2010 and 2012. In the 2008/09 season he played with FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League and was voted the best young player in the Swiss league.

Stocker tore a cruciate ligament in his 100th Super League game against BSC Young Boys on April 23, 2011  and was operated on two days later. His first game after the injury break was on December 3, 2011 in a 1-0 home win against FC Luzern . Stocker extended his contract prematurely by two additional years until the end of June 2016.

At the end of the 2012/13 season , Stocker became Swiss champions for the fifth time with FC Basel and the team reached the cup final , which they lost in the penalty shoot-out. In the UEFA Europa League 2012/13 he reached the semi-finals with FC Basel against the reigning UEFA Champions League winners FC Chelsea and was eliminated after two defeats with an aggregate result of 2-5 .

He finished the 2013/14 season with FC Basel for the 17th time as champions (for the fifth time in a row) and was repeatedly in the final of the Swiss Cup , which was lost to FC Zurich after extra time 2-0. Through the group games in the Champions League season , he and his team reached the Europa League up to the quarter-finals.

Hertha BSC

For the 2014/15 season , Stocker moved to Bundesliga club Hertha BSC , where he signed a contract until June 30, 2018.

On August 24, 2014 (4th matchday) Stocker played his first competitive game for the German team for Hertha BSC II in the Regionalliga Nordost against VfB Auerbach and also scored his first goal for Berlin with the goal to make it 6-0. In the Bundesliga he made his debut on September 19, 2014 (4th match day) in a 2-2 away game against SC Freiburg , when he came on for Genki Haraguchi in the 68th minute. His first Bundesliga goal was the 1-0 goal on April 5, 2015 (27th matchday) in a 2-0 home win against the  newly promoted and Bundesliga newcomer SC Paderborn 07 - also in the 68th minute.

Return to Basel

After Stocker only made three substitutions in the first half of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season , he returned to FC Basel on January 10, 2018, six months before his contract with Hertha expired June 2021 signed.

National team

Stocker completed seven international matches for the Swiss U-21 national team . On August 20, 2008 he made his debut in the senior national team . In the game against the Cyprus selection he was on the starting line-up and scored his first goal.
