Omar Federico Alderete Fernández (born December 26, 1996 in Asunción ) is a Paraguayan soccer player who has been under contract with the Swiss first division club FC Basel since July 2019 . The central defender has been a Paraguayan international since November 2018 .

Career

Born in the Paraguayan capital Asunción , Omar Alderete began playing football for the local club Cerro Porteño . In his youth he was still active in the position of striker , but was retrained as a center- back when he was 15 . On May 12, 2016 (16th matchday of Apertura) he made his professional debut in the top Paraguayan division in the 0-1 away defeat against Club Rubio Ñu . He scored his first goal in his third appearance on August 1, 2016 (5th matchday of Clausura) in a 2-0 away win against Club Guaraní . In that 2016 game year, Alderete played eight league games in which he scored a goal. Until his move in early August 2017, he played nine league games for the Ciclón in the 2017 season .

On August 4, 2017, Omar Alderte moved on loan for the entire 2017/18 season to the Argentine first division club Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata . Before he could play a game for Gimnasia, Alderete hit the headlines when a nude picture of him appeared on the Internet after his girlfriend's smartphone was stolen. He made his debut on August 26, 2017 in a 4-4 draw against CSD Defensa y Justicia . At the club from La Plata , he quickly established himself as a regular player. On March 31, 2018 (21st matchday), he scored his first goal of the season in a 3-1 home defeat against the Argentinos Juniors . After 22 league appearances in which he was able to score a goal, he returned to Paraguay.

After being recommended at Gimnasia, league rival CA Huracán secured 80% of Omar Alderete's transfer rights on July 20, 2018 for a transfer fee of US $ 1.6 . At his new club he met his compatriot Saúl Salcedo , who had previously joined the Globo . In contrast to Salcedo, who was eight months younger, Alderete did not break into the starting line-up. When deployed, he often had to resort to left full defense . He only replaced the experienced central defender Federico Mancinelli and the preferred Salcedo in the rarest of cases. He ended the season with eight league appearances and also played five games in the Copa Libertadores and two games in the Copa Argentina .

On June 4, 2019, the Swiss first division club FC Basel announced the signing of Alderete, where he signed a four-year contract and was scheduled to replace Marek Suchý , who had left the club. He made his debut on July 19, 2019 (1st matchday) in a 4-1 away win against FC Sion . Four days later, he scored his first goal in a 3-2 away defeat against PSV Eindhoven in the second qualifying round of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League . At the Bebbi , he quickly established himself as the starting line-up of head coach Marcel Koller in the 2019/20 season . On December 1, 2019 (16th match day), he scored for the first time in the top Swiss league in a 3-0 home win against BSC Young Boys .

National team

With the Paraguayan U17 national team , Omar Alderete took part in the U17 South American Championship in Argentina in 2013 , where he was on the pitch in eight out of nine games. Two years later, he was with the U20 at the U20 South American Championship in Uruguay . In this competition he played seven games and then four more test games until May 2016.

On November 20, 2018, Alderete made his debut in the 1-1 draw against South Africa for the A-selection .
