Fabian Frei (born January 8, 1989 in Frauenfeld ) is a Swiss football player . He is under contract with FC Basel .

Fabian Frei's father is the football coach Markus Frei , who led the Swiss U-17 national team to the European championship in 2002 .
Career
society
The midfielder came from the youth of FC Winterthur to FC Basel , where he was accepted into the professional team. In the 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons he played 49 games for FC Basel. Frei made his league debut on the first match day of the 2007/08 season on July 22, 2007 in a 1-0 win against FC Zurich . At that time, coach Christian Gross put him in the starting line-up. He scored his first league goal on December 4, 2008 in a 3-1 home win against FC Aarau in St. Jakob-Park . In 2008 he won both the national championship and the Swiss Cup; in the summer of 2008 I won the watch cup . At the beginning of July 2009 he was loaned to the Axpo Super League club FC St. Gallen for two years . There he should collect match practice. For the 2011/12 season he returned to Basel.
At the end of the 2012/13 season , Frei became Swiss champions for the third time with FC Basel and was in the final of the Swiss Cup , which they lost in the penalty shootout . In the UEFA Europa League 2012/13 he was eliminated with FC Basel in the semifinals against Champions League winners FC Chelsea . The season 2013/14 ended free with FC Basel again stood as a champion and in the final of the Swiss Cup , which was lost after extra time. Frei had a total of 66 appearances under coach Murat Yakin and scored seven goals. In the 2014/15 season, Frei won the championship with FC Basel. FC Basel was again in the final of the Swiss Cup and lost 3-0 to FC Sion . In the Champions League , FC Basel made it to the round of 16. Under the new coach Paulo Sousa Frei made a total of 56 appearances (four goals).
Since the 2015/16 season Frei has played for the German Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05 . He received a contract that runs until 2019. In the 2-2 draw against SV Werder Bremen on December 16, 2017, the 17th matchday of the 2017/18 season, he scored his first Bundesliga goal in stoppage time in his last Bundesliga appearance for 1. FSV Mainz 05.
During the 2017/18 winter break, Frei returned to FC Basel, where he received a contract that ran until June 30, 2022.

From 2008 to 2011 Frei played for the Swiss U-21 team .
On October 7, 2011 he made his debut for the Swiss senior team in the European Championship qualifier at Liberty Stadium in Swansea against Wales . At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Swiss squad. He played his only European Championship game in the opening game against Albania when he came on in the final quarter of an hour. In the three remaining games until he was eliminated in the round of 16, he stayed on the bench.
