Taulant Xhaka [ ˈʤaka ] (born March 28, 1991 in Basel , Switzerland ) is an Albanian football player who was previously a Swiss U-16 to U-21 national player. In addition to Albanian citizenship, he also has Swiss citizenship .

Birth and childhood

Xhaka was born in 1991 to Kosovar Albanian parents from Pristina in Basel. Taulant grew up with his brother Granit, who was one and a half years his junior, in the Basel district of St. Johann. Granit Xhaka is also a professional soccer player, but unlike Taulant, he plays for the Swiss national team .

Xhaka started playing football at FC Concordia Basel , and moved to the juniors of FC Basel in 2003. He made his debut in the first team on September 19, 2010 in the Cup game against FC Mendrisio-Stabio , when he came on in the 72nd minute when the score was 4-0. In the 2010/11 season, Xhaka became Swiss champions for the first time with FC Basel.

In January 2012, FC Basel awarded it to the Grasshopper Club Zurich until June 30, 2013 .

He has been back at his home club since the 2013/14 season and is there regularly. In the 2013/14 season, Xhaka finished the championship with FC Basel for the 17th time as champions and was in the final of the Swiss Cup , which was lost after extra time. Basel's Champions League season ended after the group stage, but Basel reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League . Xhaka had a total of 52 appearances under coach Murat Yakin , including 23 in the Super League, four in the Cup, ten in the Champions and five in the Europa League, as well as ten in friendly matches. In the 2014/15 season, Xhaka finished the 2014/15 championship with FCB for the 18th time as Swiss champions (for the sixth time in a row). Basel was repeatedly in the final of the Swiss Cup , but it was lost 3-0 to FC Sion . In the Champions League , Basel reached the round of 16. Under coach Paulo Sousa , Xhaka had a total of 52 appearances, including 29 in the Super League, four in the Cup, seven in the Champions League and twelve in friendly matches. During the season he scored a Super League goal.

Under coach Urs Fischer , Xhaka won the championship title at the end of the 2015/16 championship and the 2016/17 championship , his fourth and fifth championship titles with FCB. They also won the cup competition on May 25, 2017 3-0 against Sion and thus the double .

National team

Xhaka played for the Swiss U-17 national team at the U-17 European Championship in 2008 . He made his debut with the Swiss U-20s on September 6, 2010 in the stadium Breite , Schaffhausen against Germany . His first game for the Swiss U-21s was on October 7, 2011 in a 1-0 away win against Georgia . At the beginning of the 2016 European Championship qualification in September 2014, he decided to play for Albania in the future. He played his first international match for Albania when he won the qualifying first (1-0 against Portugal) on September 7, 2014 and is therefore no longer eligible to play for Switzerland.

In the European Football Championship 2016 in France, he was in the Albanian contingent added. In the opening game he not only played against his home country Switzerland, but also against his brother Granit, who wore the Swiss jersey. Albania lost the game 0-1. Against France he played in the final quarter of an hour, against Romania he was not taken into account. Then the team dropped out.
