Sascha Riether (born March 23, 1983 in Lahr ) is a former German soccer player who works as the coordinator of the licensed players department of FC Schalke 04 .
Club career
Beginnings and time at SC Freiburg
Sascha Riether worked in the youth teams of FV Kuhbach (today SC Kuhbach-Reichenbach ) and Offenburger FV before moving to the B-Jugend of SC Freiburg in July 1998 . In 2002 he was brought into the professional team of SC Freiburg . In 2002/03 he made his professional football debut on the 1st matchday of the 2nd Bundesliga . In the 1-0 away win against Alemannia Aachen , he played for the entire season. He quickly made his breakthrough at SC Freiburg. Riether was used both in the right midfield and in the defensive midfield. At the end of his first professional season, he was promoted to the first division with the SCF . In the 2003/04 season , Riether was one of the top performers who made it possible to stay in the Bundesliga. On August 2, 2003 (1st matchday), the midfielder equalized in the 1: 4 defeat against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on his first division debut . It was his first ever professional hit. In the following year , the Freiburg team went back to the 2nd division with Riether. After he had missed promotion to the Bundesliga twice in fourth place with SC Freiburg, he left Freiburg despite a contract that ran until 2009 .
VfL Wolfsburg
Since 2007 - as a regular from the start - he played for VfL Wolfsburg and was mainly used in the right-back position under coach Felix Magath . In its first season, the team reached fifth place in the table and thus qualified for the UEFA Cup competition. There he played six games. The following year , VfL became German champions for the first time in the club's history and brought Riether the first title of his career. The team also qualified for the UEFA Champions League . Wolfsburg, however, was eliminated from the competition in the group stage - Riether played in all six games. Since VfL was third in the group, the team was allowed to compete in the UEFA Europa League . There they were only eliminated in the quarterfinals against Fulham . In these two years and in the following two years he was always part of the Wolfsburg team. In 2010 he made the leap into the German national soccer team thanks to strong performances in the Wolves' jersey .
1. FC Cologne
In July 2011, 1. FC Köln signed Riether. From the beginning he had a regular place in the defensive midfield, mostly alongside Martin Lanig . On March 25, 2012 (27th matchday), he played his 200th Bundesliga game in a 6-1 home defeat against Borussia Dortmund . From the seventh to the 12th match day, as well as on the 23rd matchday, Riether led the Cologne team as captain onto the field. In the one year he was in Cologne, he only missed one Bundesliga game due to a suspension and played all but two games for the full playing time. He also made two games for 1. FC Köln in the DFB Cup.
After the relegation of 1. FC Köln he played no role in the plans of the new coach Holger Stanislawski , which is why he was advised to find a new club.
Fulham FC
At the beginning of July, Riether was loaned out to English first division club Fulham for the 2012/13 season, which also secured a purchase option. Riether made his debut for Fulham on the first day of the new Premier League season against Norwich City . After good performance in his first year at Fulham, the club took advantage of the purchase option for Riether in May 2013 and signed him. In 35 league games he was able to score one goal and prepared six more hits. In the following season he was unable to build on the good previous season. He was only able to prepare three goals. The low point was a sports court suspension for three games after an assault against Adnan Januzaj in the game against Manchester United . At the end of the 2013/14 season , Fulham FC rose. In addition to 66 games in the Premier League, Riether played a total of four times in the FA Cup and twice in the League Cup .
Return to SC Freiburg
In June 2014 it was announced that Riether was returning to SC Freiburg for the 2014/15 Bundesliga season . For the sports club, he played 19 Bundesliga games and made two more in the DFB Cup. At the end of the season, SC Freiburg was relegated penultimate to the second division.
End of career at FC Schalke 04
For the 2015/16 season , Riether joined FC Schalke 04 and signed a one-year contract until June 30, 2016. The contract contained the option for another season, which was linked to the condition of completing half of the games. Across all competitions, he played 20 competitive games (16 of them in the starting line-up) in the 2015/16 season for his new club. At the end of the 2015/16 season, Riether's contract was extended for another year until June 30, 2017.
His contract, which expired at the end of the 2016/17 season, was not extended. From September 11, 2017, Riether again took part in team training at FC Schalke 04 as a player without a contract under Domenico Tedesco . After good training performance, the defensive player received a contract on October 6, 2017 until the end of the 2017/18 season . Until the end of the season he did not appear in the league. In June 2018, Riether extended his contract for the 2018/19 season .
On May 9, 2019, he finally announced his final career end at the end of the season on the FC Schalke 04 website and expressed the desire to get his coaching license as soon as possible. On the last day of the match, Riether was substituted on by Huub Stevens shortly before the end of the game and made his first Bundesliga appearance in two years.
National team
On October 23, 2002 Riether made his debut in the U-20 national team in the 1: 2 defeat against England in Dessau. Riether played 20 times in the U21 national team , temporarily led it as team captain and took part in the 2006 European Championship with her . On August 11, he came in Copenhagen in the test international against Denmark as a substitute for his A international debut. National coach Joachim Löw nominated Riether for the two qualifying games of the European Football Championship 2012 against Belgium and Azerbaijan. In the second game, Riether was allowed to play the entire season. There coach Joachim Löw put him in the right full-back position. The team of the DFB won against Azerbaijan 6-1 in Cologne .
Style of play
Riether was known for his high commitment during a game. He was characterized by a good overview of the game and calm on the ball. In addition, he was considered a very passable player, who was more inclined to horizontal passes instead of creating chances with long passes. His strengths came more into play in the game against the ball. His flexibility was appreciated, so he could be used as a right full-back or in the defensive midfield .
After the active career
At the end of June 2019, Schalke 04 introduced Riether as the first coordinator of the club's licensed player department.
