Adnan Januzaj (born February 5, 1995 in Brussels ) is a Belgian football player . The attacking midfielder has been under contract with Real Sociedad San Sebastián since June 2017 .

origin

Januzaj's parents are Kosovar Albanians . His father fled to Belgium in 1992 to avoid being drafted into the Yugoslav People's Army involved in the Bosnian War . His uncles were members of the Kosovo Liberation Army , which in the Kosovo war for the independence of Kosovo fought.

Januzaj's mother's family was deported from the Kosovar city of Istog to Turkey . The family later emigrated to Belgium. There Januzaj's parents met in an Albanian community in Brussels , where Januzaj was born and grew up.

Career

In the club

Januzaj started playing football at FC Brussels and joined RSC Anderlecht in 2005 at the age of ten . In 2011 he moved to the youth department of Manchester United .

He made his professional debut on August 11, 2013 in the 2-0 win against Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield , when he was substituted on by coach David Moyes for Danny Welbeck in the 83rd minute . He made his Premier League debut on September 14, 2013 in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace , when he came on for Ashley Young in the 67th minute . On October 5, Januzaj was used for the first time from the start in the 2-1 away win against AFC Sunderland ; while he scored his first two goals for the professional team of Manchester United. Shortly thereafter, he extended his contract to summer 2018. On December 10, 2013, he made his European debut in a 1-0 victory in the last group game in the Champions League against Shakhtar Donetsk . For the 2014/15 season he took over the shirt number 11 from Ryan Giggs .

For the season 2015/16 Januzaj changed shortly before the end of the transfer window on 31 August 2015 loan for a year in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund . His shirt number was 9. On September 12, 2015, he made his debut for BVB in a 4-2 win on matchday four at Hannover 96 when he came on for Jonas Hofmann in the 60th minute . He only made six appearances in the Bundesliga and never played from the start. In the Europa League he made five appearances in the group stage, three times from the start.

After Januzaj could not prevail, the loan contract was terminated prematurely on January 7, 2016 and Januzaj returned to Manchester United. Since his return he came a. also used in the U-21.

In preparation for the 2016/17 season , Januzaj was sorted out by the new coach José Mourinho . On August 12, he moved for the season on loan to the league rivals AFC Sunderland trained by David Moyes .

In the national team

Because of his origins and that of his family, Januzaj could have played for his country of birth Belgium, Kosovo, Albania, Turkey or Serbia, which has been independent of Serbia since 2008. According to his father, the national teams of Serbia and Turkey had no chance. Januzaj could not have played for England until 2018, as he would have lived in the country for five years since his 18th birthday.

In October 2013, the Belgian coach wanted Marc Wilmots Januzaj for the World Cup qualifiers of the Belgian national team against Croatia and Wales nominate. However, he canceled his participation because he had not yet decided on a country.

After FIFA allowed the Kosovar selection to play unofficial friendly matches against FIFA members, Januzaj was asked to play the first of its kind against Haiti on March 3, 2014. According to the Secretary General of the Kosovar Football Association, Eroll Salihu, this invitation is symbolic. Januzaj canceled his participation.

On April 23, 2014 Januzaj announced that he had chosen Belgium. He was then appointed in May 2014 as one of two newcomers to the squad for the World Cup in Brazil . On May 26, 2014 Januzaj made his debut for Belgium in a test planned as an international match against Luxembourg; However, the game was not recognized by FIFA as an international match due to violations of the substitution rules for friendly matches. He finally made his debut on June 7, 2014 when he came on for Eden Hazard in the 73rd minute of the 1-0 friendly win against Tunisia . At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he came in the third group game against South Korea for his only appearance at this tournament. Januzaj was in the starting line-up, but was replaced after 59 minutes. He scored his first international goal at the 2018 World Cup in the group game against England.
