economy

The municipality's economy is essentially agricultural. Before 1999, 80% of the population worked in agriculture.

Because the city is close to the border, Istog benefits from the export of fish abroad. The modern fish plant (trout farm) on the Istočka River currently employs around 70 people. The privatization, which took place in 2004, is considered proof of a successful privatization process.
