Igor Zubeldia Elorza (born March 30, 1997 in Azkoitia ) is a Spanish football player who is currently under contract with the first division club Real Sociedad . The defensive midfielder is a former Spanish U21 international and was selected as a European U21 champion in 2019 .

Career

Igor Zubeldia moved to the youth department of the Basque club Real Sociedad in 2008 . For the 2015/16 season he was promoted to the B-team and there he was used regularly. Good performances prompted the head coach of the first team Eusebio Sacristán Igor Zubeldia to order for the last league games of the season in the first team. On May 13, 2016 (38th matchday) he made his debut in the top Spanish division when he came into play for Rubén Pardo in the 1-0 away win against FC Valencia in the final phase of the game. In the next season of 2016/17 he continued to play for the B-team, but was also listed in several men's league games in the matchday squad and played four appearances.

For the 2017/18 season he was finally promoted to the professional team of the Sanse , but injured himself in preparation and therefore missed the season opener. After his recovery, he gradually established himself in the starting lineup. On December 20, 2017 (17th matchday), Zubeldia scored his first league goal for Real Sociedad. He scored in the 3-1 home win against Sevilla FC in the 76th minute after being substituted on 30 seconds earlier. He ended the 2017/18 season with 24 league appearances in which he scored one goal and prepared two more goals. On June 29, 2018, Zubeldia extended his contract until 2024. In this 2018/19 season , the defensive midfielder was already an integral part of the starting line-up and played in 33 league games in which he did not score. He also played 33 league games in the next 2019/20 season.

National team

In September 2018, Igor Zubeldia worked for the Spanish U21 national team for the first time . He participated with the selection at the U21 European Championship 2019 in Italy and San Marino . There he was used in a game and was European champion with La Rojita .
