Martin Schmidt (born April 12, 1967 in Naters ) is a Swiss football coach .
Career
player
Schmidt was active from 1976 to 1998 for FC Naters , with whom he rose from the seventh-class 3rd division to the National B division. He then played for FC Raron until 2001 .
Trainer
Directly after his playing career at FC Raron, Schmidt was initially a coach assistant and from 2003 head coach. In 2008 he took over the second team at FC Thun .
- Mainz 05
Two years later he was hired by 1. FSV Mainz 05 as head coach for the second team. In the 2013/14 season Schmidt reached third place with Mainz 05 II in the Regionalliga Südwest . After the league competitor SC Freiburg II refrained from participating in the promotion games, Mainz 05 II prevailed there against TSG Neustrelitz under the direction of Schmidt and rose to the professional 3rd division for the first time .
On February 17, 2015, he became the successor of Kasper Hjulmand as coach of the club's first team. The season 2015/16 ended Mainz 05 on the sixth place and qualified for the first time in club history for the group stage of the Europa League . After the 2016/17 season , the employment relationship was terminated prematurely after the league was only secured in the penultimate game of the season.
- Vfl Wolfsburg
From September 18, 2017, Schmidt was the coach of VfL Wolfsburg as the successor to Andries Jonker . VfL Wolfsburg played a draw in his first seven league games, making Schmidt the Bundesliga coach with the most draws after taking office. On February 19, 2018, he resigned as a coach.
- FC Augsburg
On April 10, 2019, Schmidt took over the Bundesliga team of FC Augsburg , which after the 28th matchday was four points ahead of the relegation place in 15th place in the table, as the successor to Manuel Baum . Also at the end of the season, the team occupied 15th place in the table with 32 points.
