Kasper Hjulmand [ ˈkæspɐ ˈjuːlmanˀ ] (born April 9, 1972 in Aalborg ) is a Danish football coach and former player .

Player career

Hjulmand was active as a player for Randers Freja , Herlev IF and B.93 Copenhagen . Because of a sports disability , he ended his career at the age of 24.

Coaching career

After retiring from his career, he made his B coaching license at Københavns Universitet in 1998 .

First years as a trainer

In 1998 the then 26-year-old Hjulmand took over a junior team from Lyngby BK . After five years he took over the second representation of the club from Lyngby . In 2005 he made this post available. At the beginning of the 2006/07 season he took over the first team that played in the 1st division , Denmark's second division. Hjulmand led the team as second division champions to promotion to the Superligaen , Denmark's first division. In the following season, the team rose from bottom of the table with 18 points.

FC Nordsjælland

For the new season he left the club and was assistant coach of Morten Wieghorst at FC Nordsjælland . Before the takeover by Wieghorst in 2006, FC Nordsjælland had always played first-class since the club was founded in 2003, but the club found itself in the lower third of the table. With Hjulmand as assistant coach, the club improved from ninth to sixth place over the next three years. In 2010 and 2011, Hjulmand won the Danish Cup as assistant coach for the Farum club . The cup victories qualified them for the qualifying rounds for the UEFA Europa League. Both times the team narrowly failed at Sporting Lisbon .

Wieghorst took over the Danish U-21 national team after the U-21 European Football Championship in 2011 , and Hjulmand became the new head coach of FC Nordsjælland. The team was strengthened by the Danish national players Patrick Mtiliga and Mikkel Beckmann and with players from their own youth. One of these players was the future Danish national team player Jores Okore . After two defeats and a draw in the first three games, twelve wins were achieved in the next 15 games. The team from Hjulmand finished second in the table. In the second half of the season, the team fought a long-distance duel with leaders FC Copenhagen . On the fifth to last matchday, the capital city club and Danish record champions were defeated 1-0 in front of their own audience. Of the last four remaining games, three were won, while FC Copenhagen won only one of the last four games in the league; at the end of the season, winning the Danish championship was the club's greatest success to date.

After winning the championship and placing the Danish league in the five-year standings , the club received eligibility for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League . In the group stage, after five defeats and one draw, they were eliminated from the bottom of the group. The club had the worst record of all 32 participants. In the Danish league, FC Nordsjælland was runner-up. In the 2013/14 season they were eliminated in qualifying for the Champions League against Zenit St. Petersburg , in the play-offs for the Europa League they failed at IF Elfsborg and in the league they finished sixth.

Head coach at 1. FSV Mainz 05

On May 15, 2014, Hjulmand signed a three-year contract with the German Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05, valid from the 2014/15 season . Another week later, they were eliminated in the first round of the DFB Cup against third division club Chemnitzer FC . On August 24, 2014, Hjulmand made his debut at 2-2 on the first day of the Bundesliga season 2014/15 in the game at SC Paderborn as a coach in the Bundesliga. That game was followed by seven straight games, including three wins. From the following twelve games, he got just one more victory with the team. On February 17, 2015, he was given leave of absence; his contract was terminated on September 30, 2015.

Return to FC Nordsjælland

From January 1, 2016, Hjulmand was again the head coach of FC Nordsjælland as the successor to Ólafur Kristjánsson . He finished the 2016/17 season with the team in fifth place in the championship round. A season later , FC Nordsjælland placed third in the championship round. The 2018/19 season ended again for the FCN in last place in the championship round. At the end of the season, Hjulmand resigned as a coach.
