Atlético Celaya

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Club Atlético Celaya is a Mexican football club , in 1994, through the merger of the clubs Atlético Cuernavaca emerged (from the state of Morelos) and Escuadra Celese de Celaya. Atlético Español soon merged into the young club. All the merged clubs have brought a piece of their old identity into the new club: the name was chosen from Atlético Cuernavaca (although the former Atlético Español is also found here), from Celeste de Celaya the sky-blue colors and from Atlético Español the heraldic animal, the stamping bull, which earned the club the nickname "toros" (bulls).

Atlético Celaya took the second division place of one of its predecessor clubs in the 1994/95 season and made it straight away. The first season in the Primera División should also prove to be the most successful in the club's history. First Celaya was group winner and in the subsequent play-offs they could advance to the final. Atlético lost 1: 1 and 0: 0 against Necaxa only because of the away goals rule that applied at the time .

From now on, however, the club went downhill all the time, and was often only last in the group. In addition, there were financial problems that finally led to the sale of the first division license to an industrialist from Morelos during the winter break of the 2002/03 season. He created a team called CF Cuernavaca Colibries at short notice , but it immediately dismounted and disappeared as quickly as it had once appeared.

But Atlético Celaya has not been represented in professional football since then, so that the older city club Celaya FC, which was reactivated at the same time, has represented the city in professional football since then . This happened through the relocation of CF La Piedad, who played in the Primera División 'A' , to Celaya . But later Club Celaya became a farm team of Querétaro FC , which after its own relegation from the football club absorbed the recently reactivated club, causing Celaya FC to disappear again in the summer of 2007.
