Barry Opdam (born February 27, 1976 in Leiden ) is a Dutch football player . He plays in the position of defender .

Career

He started his career at FC Lisse . From the 1996/97 season he played for AZ Alkmaar . Back then as a promoted player in the honor division , Opdam helped lead the club to one of the top teams in the Netherlands. In 2004, the team qualified for the UEFA Cup , where they advanced to the semi-finals, but there Sporting Lisbon had to give way. In 2005 they were third in the league and vice-champions a year later. In 2007 the club moved into the final of the KNVB Cup , but could not win it. Opdam has played over 300 games for the AZ, but it was never enough for a title. In summer 2008, he followed after ten years at his former Alkmaar coach Co Adriaanse to Austria to Red Bull Salzburg . The peel was 1.5 million . In Salzburg he formed the core women defense with Ibrahim Sekagya in the 2008/2009 season. Coach Adriaanse described Opdam as his absolute dream player. The Austrian championship title was won in the first year on the Salzach . The success was repeated in the following season. Under Huub Stevens he played as a substitute for Franz Schiemer in the defensive midfield .

After the 2009/10 season, Barry Opdam left Salzburg to end his career at FC Volendam in the second highest Dutch league from summer 2010 .

National team

For the Dutch national team , he played eight games since 2005; he scored a goal. He played his first game on June 4, 2008 against Romania , which was won 2-0. Against the Czech selection Opdam scored his first goal for the Elftal . In 2008 Opdam was in the Dutch squad for the Olympic football tournament, but decided not to participate in favor of his new club Salzburg.
