Igor Protti (born September 24, 1967 in Rimini ) is a former Italian football player .

The (outside) striker played for AS Livorno for the longest part of his career and, together with Dario Hübner, is the only player who has ever been top scorer in Serie A , Serie B and Serie C.

Career

Protti played for the longest of his long career in lower-class teams, but was best known for his 24 goals in the 1995/96 Serie A season, when he became top scorer with Giuseppe Signori , even though his team, AS Bari , was relegated. In 1996 Protti then moved to a top club, Lazio Rome , where he could not prevail. After brief engagements at SSC Napoli and AC Reggiana , Protti decided in 1999 to go to the club where his career really began, at AS Livorno . Under his leadership, the club rose from Serie C1 to Serie A in 2004.

Last season

His last season as a professional footballer 2004/05 was to be his best: he managed with AS Livorno a ninth place in the table that was never thought possible. He played his last competitive game on May 22, 2005 against Juventus Turin (2-2). The then 37-year-old crowned his career with a goal for a 1-1 equalizer. Protti, who said goodbye in tears, was replaced with a standing ovation.

Status in Livorno

In honor of Igor Protti, who scored 120 goals in 267 league games for Livorno, making him the club's record player and top scorer, it was decided that his number 10 would never be awarded again. In 2007 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Livorno . The President of Livorno, Aldo Spinelli, said of him: "Protti was our best captain, a symbol for the club." However, Protti wanted the number 10 jersey to be awarded again. New signing Francesco Tavano took over the jersey with the number 10th
