Javier Irureta (born April 1, 1948 in Irún ) is a former Spanish football player and coach .
Javier Irureta is a famous football coach and former player. He played as a striker for Atlético Madrid and Athletic Bilbao for 13 years . As a coach, he has looked after several Spanish first division teams - particularly successfully at Celta and Depor. He received the title of “Coach of the Year” in 1998 while coaching Celta from both Don Balón and El País, and as a champion with Depor, he received this award a second time from Don Balón . As the only coach ever, Irureta managed to coach the two most important Basque teams, Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad , as well as the two largest Galician clubs, Celta Vigo and Deportivo La Coruña .
Player career
Atlético
He was part of the legendary Atlético Madrid team in the early 1970s. He achieved two championship titles with his club, was able to win the Copa del Rey once and won the 1974 World Cup against Club Atlético Independiente from Argentina 2: 0/0: 1, as FC Bayern Munich , which previously won the European Cup final against Atlético, did not want to compete.
Athletic Bilbao
After eight successful years at Atlético, Irureta ended his playing career at Athletic Bilbao in the Basque Country . There he was once vice Copa del Rey and vice UEFA Cup winner.
International
Javier Irureta made 6 appearances for the Spanish national team, but since it was very weak at the time, he did not play in any major tournament for his country. He also ran once for the Basque selection.
Coaching career
Javier Irureta was 6th in the UEFA Cup in 1991 with Real Oviedo . He did this in 1998 with Celta Vigo . His most successful time, however, he had at Deportivo La Coruna, where he was hired in 1999. With the Galicians he won the championship in 2000 and the Copa del Rey in the final against Real Madrid in 2002 . After the championship, he was runner-up in 2001 and 2002, as well as 3rd place in 2003 and 2004 and thus qualification for the UEFA Champions League , in which he led his team to the quarter-finals in 2001 and 2002, and even to the semi-finals in 2004. After 6 extremely successful years, Irureta withdrew from the daily coaching business.
In 2006 Irureta became a coach at Betis Sevilla . However, he had an unsuccessful brief appearance at the relegation companions Andalusians, where he was released during the first half of the season. From January to March 2008 he was coach at Real Zaragoza replacing the previously dismissed Víctor Fernández . After only one win from the first six games and the fact that Zaragoza was only on a non-relegation place because of the direct comparison, Irureta drew the consequences and resigned after only 6 weeks on the coaching bench.
