Real Unión Club is a Spanish football club from the Basque city of Irun . The team was one of the founding members in 1928 of the Spanish Football League and currently plays in Segunda División B . Real Unión has won the Spanish Cup four times (the only all-Spanish championship at the time).

history

Real Unión was created in 1915 from the merger of Irún Sporting Club and Racing Club de Irún . The latter had already won the Spanish Football Cup in 1913 . The club was initially called Union Club Irún , before Alfonso XIII. awarded the club the addition of Real (Spanish for royal ). During the second Spanish republic , this addition disappeared for a short time due to the ban on monarchist symbols. Real Unión won the Spanish Cup three more times, in 1918 and 1924 in the final against Real Madrid and in 1927 against Arenas Club de Getxo . In 1922 they only lost in the final against FC Barcelona . In 1932, in the fourth season after the league was founded, the club lost the category and has not been promoted to the Primera División since . The 2008/09 season Real Unión was able to complete the championship of Segunda División B - Group 1 and qualified for the playoffs in the second division. In the first round they failed at FC Cádiz , but the club was able to prevail after a win and a draw in the second playoff round against CE Sabadell and thus reached the second division again for the first time since the 1964/65 season. However, the club rose after only one season as the bottom of the table again.
