The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the first time in 1975/76 . After the dissolution of Division One at the end of the season 1974/75 , the newly founded league of the Scottish Football Association celebrated its premiere. It was also the 79th edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1975/76 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won for the 36th time in the club's history, the Glasgow Rangers . The Rangers qualified as champions for the following European Cup season-1976/77 . Second and third placed Celtic Glasgow and Hibernian Edinburgh qualified for the UEFA Cup . As a defeated cup finalist against the Rangers , Heart of Midlothian qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The FC Dundee and FC St. Johnstone went into the First Division from. The top scorer was Kenny Dalglish of Celtic Glasgow with 24 goals .
