The Scottish Football League Division One was played for the 75th and last time in 1974/75 . It was also the 78th edition of the top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on August 31, 1974 and ended on April 26, 1975. Due to the restructuring within the Scottish league system, the Premier Division was established, which should function instead of Division One from the 1975/76 season as the first highest league in Scotland . Since the new Premier Division should only have 10 places, 8 teams had to be relegated this season. In the 1974/75 season, 18 clubs competed against each other on a total of 34 match days. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won for the 35th time in the club's history, the Glasgow Rangers . This ended the series of 9 titles in a row that the arch-rivals Celtic Glasgow had won from 1966 . The Rangers qualified as champions for the following European Cup season-1975/76 . Runner-up Hibernian Edinburgh and fourth-placed Dundee United qualified for the UEFA Cup . As a cup winner , Celtic Glasgow qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The Airdrieonians FC , FC Kilmarnock , Partick Thistle , FC Dumbarton , Dunfermline Athletic , FC Clyde , Morton and FC Arbroath all got into the reformed First Division from.
