The Scottish Football League Division One was played for the 54th time in 1953/54 . It was also the 57th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on September 5, 1953 and ended on April 16, 1954. In the 1953/54 season, 16 clubs competed against each other in a total of 30 match days. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal quotient counted .
The championship won for the 20th time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow . The Airdrieonians FC and Hamilton Academical relegated to Division Two at the end of the season . The top scorer was Jimmy Wardhaugh of Heart of Midlothian with 27 goals .
