The Scottish Football League Premier Division was held for the second time in 1976/77 . It was also the 80th edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1976/77 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won for the 30th time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow . The Bhoys thus qualified as champions for the following European Cup of National Champions Season 1977/78 . Third and fourth placed Aberdeen FC and Dundee United qualified for the UEFA Cup . As a defeated cup finalist in the Old Firm against Celtic , the Rangers qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The capital club Heart of Midlothian and FC Kilmarnock were relegated to the First Division . The top scorer was Willie Pettigrew of FC Motherwell with 21 goals .
