The Rugby Park is a football stadium in the Scottish town of Kilmarnock , United Kingdom . It is the home and property of the FC Kilmarnock football club .

history

The stadium opened on August 1, 1899. On this occasion, the home side competed against Celtic Glasgow . After they were 0-2 behind, the game ended in a 2-2 draw. The main stand was renovated in 1961 and 1989. In the summer of 1968 the floodlight system was improved , which made live television broadcasts possible. After the last game FC Kilmarnock against Glasgow Rangers (1-0) on May 7, 1994, the demolition of the old rugby park began the next day .

The venue was converted into a pure football stadium, which is only equipped with seats. The opening of the new building took place on August 6, 1995 in front of 10,004 spectators and FC Kilmarnock met the Blackburn Rovers (0: 5). In the summer of 1999, the pitch got underfloor heating and two years later a drainage system . The drainage system was so noisy during operation that residents felt disturbed by it. As a result, the club had to resort to plastic tarpaulin, under which warm air is blown.

The Rugby Park has a capacity of 18,128 spectators in its four covered stands. In June 2002, the club opened the four-star Park Hotel with 50 beds in the direct vicinity of the stadium. In 2004 a new sports bar opened in the Main Stand . Concerts are also held in the stadium. B. the British singer Sir Elton John on here.

For the Scottish Premiership 2014/15 , the natural playing field was replaced with artificial turf . This means that two stadiums ( New Douglas Park in Hamilton ) will be played on artificial green during the season.
