The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the ninth time in 1983/84 . It was also the 87th edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1983/84 season 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 game days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The FC Aberdeen won for the third time in club history after 1955 and 1980 the Scottish championship. The Dons thus qualified as champions for the following European Cup of National Champions season 1984/85 . As a defeated cup finalist , runner-up Celtic Glasgow qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The teams in third to fifth place Dundee United , Glasgow Rangers and Heart of Midlothian qualified for the UEFA Cup .
The FC St. Johnstone and FC Motherwell got into the end of the season First Division from. Celtic Glasgow's Brian McClair was the top scorer with 23 goals .
