Yüksel Gündüz (born August 16, 1937 in Tavşanlı ) is a former Turkish football player and official. Due to his long activity for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is very closely associated with this club and viewed by both fans and clubs as one of the most legendary players. He was an important part of the Fenerbahçe team that won the Turkish championship twice in a row for the first time.

Career

society

Contrary to many sources, Gündüz was not born in Ankara , but as the son of a state official and a housewife in Tavşanlı . Due to the work of the father, the family later moved to the Turkish capital. Here, the little Gündüz began as an eight- or ten-year-old with the amateur club Ankara Dışkapı SK with club football. At this club he fell to Avni Bulduk , an important figure in city football and club president of Ankara Güneşspor , and was transferred to this club a little later. Since this club was considered a talent factory at the time and was therefore often visited by talent scouts, it was noticed by those responsible for the Turkish U-18 national team in 1955. A little later, several missions for the Turkish U-18 team followed. In addition, Gündüz began from 1955 to play for Güneşspor in the Ankara football league . Due to his good performance, many clubs, above all the Istanbul clubs, began to gradually try to get Gündüz from 1956 . In 1957 he was one of the most sought-after young players of the transfer season. The club president Bulduk reached an early agreement with Galatasaray Istanbul for a change of Gündüz 'and sent his player to Istanbul to sign a contract. At Istanbul airport Gündüz was the Fenerbahçe functionaries Hüsamettin Böke and Talat Ataman intercepted and ready for half the wages the Galatasaray he was payable transferred to Fenerbahçe. After this development, Bulduk complained to the Turkish Football Association and had the effect that Gündüz could not be used for his new club for about a year. Finally, Fenerbahçe agreed with Güneşspor in the summer of 1958 on a transfer fee.

At the time of his move to Fenerbahçe, this club played in the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ). In this environment Gündüz made his professional debut on August 30, 1958 in the league game against Vefa Istanbul . In this encounter Gündüz also scored his first goal for Fenerbahçe. By the end of the season he had played seven of 18 possible league games and scored two goals. Although he did not succeed in making the leap into the regular formation, he supported the three-man team from Ergun Öztuna , Can Bartu and Lefter Küçükandonyadis . His club finished the league as champions, which Gündüz was able to get his first title at club level and was part of the Fenerbahçes squad that won the last championship title of the Istanbul professional league.

From the spring of 1959, Gündüz took part with Fenerbahçe in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig ). This league was founded in the spring of 1959 as the first nationwide national league in Turkey and replaced the regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as B. the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi, as the highest and only Turkish league. The first season of the Millî Lig was played from February 1959 to June 1959 and ended with a win for Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Gündüz took advantage of the injury-related absence of players like Ergun Öztuna and gradually fought for a regular place. In this season he completed 13 of the possible 16 league games and became the first Turkish soccer champion with his team . In the 1959/60 season he increased his stakes to 34 league appearances. He scored 14 goals and was the third most successful goalscorer of his team behind Küçükandonyadis and Bartu. His club failed to defend the championship title this season. Instead, the team won the Cemal Gürsel Cup . In the 1960/61 season Gündüz 'team succeeded again in the championship of the Millî Lig. Although he could be used in only 24 of the possible 34, he contributed 14 goals and finite templates to this success. Behind Küçükandonyadis he became the second most successful goalscorer of his team.

In the summer of 1961, Gündüz and his teammates Aydın Yelken , Tarık Kutver and Zekai Selli had to do his upcoming military service and as a result, with a few exceptions, his team would be absent for the next 14 months. With a few exceptions approved by the military or during his military leave, during which he played for the Turkish senior team and Karamgümrük, he was not to be fully available to his team again until the spring of 1963. Nevertheless, Gündüz returned to the squad in the spring of 1962 and played almost all league games for his team by the end of the season. After his return to the team, he quickly won a regular place and, despite his three goals in eight league games, could not prevent his relegation-threatened club from missing relegation at the end of the season. On August 29, 1962, Fenerbahçe hosted a friendly match with the Spanish club Valencia CF in Istanbul . Despite the fact that this was a friendly game, the players of both teams clashed several times and got into several scuffle. The Turkish press saw the guilt with the Spanish. The disciplinary committee of the Turkish Football Association took on the incidents and imposed a 21-day suspension on Gündüz, whom it identified as one of the main actors in the incidents.

His club had failed to defend its title in the national championship only in the 1961/61 season and ended the season with a 4-point deficit on arch-rivals Galatasaray as runner-up. Also in the 1962/63 season , his club remained without a title win. After this second season without a title, the club decided to restructure its squad. In contrast to other players, Gündüz was kept in the squad. The reinforcements in the team squad with players like Ogün Altıparmak showed the hoped-for effect. So Gündüz 'team won the Turkish championship in the 1963/64 and 1964/65 seasons . As a result, his team managed to defend its title in the championship, the first in the club's history. While Gündüz was used in 13 league games in the 1963/64 season, his stakes fell back to seven league games in the 1964/65 season. In the 1963/64 season he spat at an opponent in the game of April 26, 1964 against Ankara Demirspor and was therefore suspended for the following game.

In the summer of 1965 Gündüz, who recently did not come for his club on the reserve player, it was, of other first division as Beykozspor courted. After Fenerbahçe had signed offensive player Ercan Aktuna from İstanbulspor , they gave Yıldırım İper to Istanbulspor as a partial consideration in addition to Gündüz . At this club he came to only four league appearances over a season.

National team

Gündüz began his national team career in 1955 with a commitment to the Turkish U-18 national team career. For this selection he completed six more games by September 1963. In the last game, a game from 1963, he was well over 18 years old.

From the summer of 1959 he began to play for the second selection of the Turkish national team , which was called the B national team, and completed two games for this until 1961.

In April 1962, Gündüz was nominated for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team by national coach Sandro Puppo as part of a test match against the Hungarian national team , and in this encounter he played his first and only A international match.
