Ergun Öztuna (born August 16, 1937 in Uşak ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of service for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is very strongly associated with this club and is viewed by both fans and clubs as one of the most legendary players. He was considered one of the greatest talents of his time in Turkish football and was unable to develop his career due to numerous injuries. Due to his physical resemblance to the famous Hungarian soccer star Ferenc Puskás , he was nicknamed Puskás Ergun during player times . According to other sources, it was mentioned in praise during a meeting of Puskás and was therefore given this name. He scored Fenerbahçe's first goal in the Süper Lig , the top Turkish league.

Career

society

Contrary to many sources, Öztuna was not born in Akhisar , but as the son of a forester and a housewife in Uşak as the fourth of a total of five children. At the age of two, his father was transferred to Akhisar, causing the family to move to that city. Öztuna's father fell ill with leukemia in the mid-1940s and died a little later from the disease. After the father's death, the eldest son, who worked as a school inspector, looked after the family. The older brother was transferred to the western Turkish port city of Izmir , as a result of which the entire family moved there and from then on lived in the Karşıyaka district. In Akhisar, Öztuna began playing football in elementary school. His older brothers and cousins played football here for the amateur club Akhisar Güneşspor , one of the predecessor clubs of the later Turkish first division club Akhisar Belediyespor , so that Öztuna grew up in a football-loving environment and began playing club football at Güneşspor himself. After the family moved to Karşıyaka, Öztuna quickly found connection to his new surroundings thanks to his footballing skills and quickly became an important member of his street team. He later attended Karşıyaka High School and also played for the associated school team. At that time, this high school served Karşıyaka SK , the district's sports club, as the most important player supplier. So Öztuna was included in the first team of this club for the 1953/54 season and played with this in the İzmir Futbol Ligi (German Football League Izmir ), the regional football league of the western Turkish port city of Izmir. Since there was no international professional league in Turkey at that time , regional leagues existed instead in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul , Ankara and Izmir, of which the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ) was considered the most renowned. Around this time he was elected to the city's youth team and was trained here by Sait Altınordu , a former city football legend. This selection was followed by a nomination for the Turkish U-18 national team in 1955.

After his appearances for the Turkish U-18 national team, the Istanbul clubs Galatasaray Istanbul and Fenerbahçe Istanbul noticed him. At Galatasaray, head coach Gündüz Kılıç tried to sign Öztuna. But since Öztuna's family and himself were supporters of Fenerbahçe, he turned down Galatasaray's offer and instead switched to Fenerbahçe and in the summer of 1956 for a transfer fee of 15,000 Turkish Lira . At the time of his move to Fenerbahçe, this club played in the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ). In this environment, Öztuna made his professional debut on September 12, 1956 in the league game against Beyoğluspor . He quickly established himself as a regular player and completed 15 out of 18 league games in his first season for Fenerbahçe. He formed together with Can Bartu and Lefter Küçükandonyadis the three-man storm of his team and was the third most successful player of his team with eight goals this season behind the named players. His club finished the league as champions, whereby Öztuna was able to get his first title at club level. In the next season, Öztuna injured in the league game of the second match against arch-rivals Galatasaray, which also called Intercontinental Derby is called, the meniscus and fell the rest of the season out. Contrary to what is often claimed, he said he was not injured by his opponent Kadri Aytaç , but injured himself after Aytaç played him off with a body deception and Öztuna twisted his knee after a spontaneous reaction. His team missed the championship this season. Öztuna was only able to take part in some of the post-seasonal cup matches after the end of the season. In the season of 1958/59 he returned to the team squad recovered and quickly won a regular place. His club ended the season as the Istanbul championship and thus secured the last championship of this Istanbul professional league. Öztuna played 13 out of a possible 18 league games this season and scored six goals.

From the spring of 1959, Öztuna took part with Fenerbahçe in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig ). This league was founded in the spring of 1959 as the first nationwide national league in Turkey and replaced the regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as B. the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi, as the highest and only Turkish league. The first season of the Millî Lig was played from February 1959 to June 1959 and ended with a win for Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Öztuna scored in the game from the first match of the new League against MKE Ankaragücü the gateway to the intermediate 1: 0 and took it as a shooter of the first Erstligatores in the club annals. In total, he completed ten of the possible 16 league games this season and became the first Turkish football champion with his team . The last three league games this season, he was injured. After he had survived his injury for the new season, he injured himself in the game of the European Cup 1959/60 on September 3, 1959 against the Hungarian representative Csepel SC and fell out the rest of the season. This season his team failed to defend their title in the championship. Instead, the team won the Cemal Gürsel Cup . Öztuna was only able to play in this post-season cup competition after the end of the season. In his third season for the Blue-Yellows, he completed ten league games, scored six goals and became Turkish champions again with his team.

At the beginning of the new season, the 1961/62 season , Öztuna played in three matches and then fell due to a renewed meniscus injury for almost the entire rest of the season. He injured himself in the game of the European Cup against the German representative 1. FC Nürnberg . His club failed to defend the title in the national championship this season and ended the season with a 4-point deficit on arch-rivals Galatasaray as runner-up. This fact led to the fact that the club's management decided to revise the squad and Öztuna included many players for sale. Despite these developments, Öztuna stayed with Fenerbahçe for the new season and was sent to Rome for meniscus surgery in September 1962 . His injury and recovery from it again meant that Öztuna was almost completely unavailable in the 1962/63 season. Only from the end of May 1963 could he be used and completed seven league games by the end of the season and scored two goals. His club remained without a title win this season.

After this second season without a title, the club decided to restructure its squad. Thus, from Karşıyaka SK with Ogün Altıparmak one of the most promising offensive talents committed. Karşıyaka SK, in turn, took advantage of this move to sign his former player Öztuna. Since Öztuna did not play a competitive game this season, the opportunity arose to commit him from the row during the season. Fenerbahçe agreed to the move under the tie that Öztuna would not be allowed to play in the games against Fenerbahçe. So Öztuna moved back to Karşıyaka in mid-November 1963. With his new club, he completed 14 league games by the end of the season and scored one goal. Since the club missed relegation, Öztuna left this after a year and returned to Fenerbahçe. He and his team won the Turkish championship in the 1964/65 season . As a result, his team managed to defend its title in the championship, the first in the club's history. In this championship season, Öztuna was again more of a reservist life due to injury and was used in eight league games. This fact led to Öztuna being put on the sales list at the end of the season. Although Öztuna also had an offer from some Turkish first division clubs, he moved to the Austrian second division SK Austria Klagenfurt in July 1965 .

Öztuna played one season at Austria Klagenfurt and moved in the summer of 1966 to the club Karşıyaka SK, which had been promoted back to the 1st Turkish league. At this club he established himself better this time and came to 20 league appearances with four goals. But since his club again missed relegation, Öztuna left the club one more time. Öztuna moved to the new first division club Bursaspor for the new season . This change came about at the request of Bursaspor coach Sabri Kiraz . Here he formed a successful team with the other offensive players Ersel Altıparmak , Mesut Şen and Haluk Erdemoğlu and contributed four goals and several assists to the 6th place in the table of his team. After Kiraz was replaced as head coach by Muhtar Tunçaltan in the course of the season , Öztuna got fewer and fewer stakes and was put on the sales list at the end of the season.

After Öztuna was put on the sales list at Bursaspor, he moved to third division club Nazilli Belediyespor in the summer of 1968 . After half a season he left this club and instead signed on with league rivals Rizespor , following his long-time teammate Şenol Birol . He was hired as a player- coach at the club in his hometown Rize and one of his first acts was to bring Birol Pekel and Öztuna to his team. At this club he only played until the end of the season. After he injured himself again in February 1969, however, he was out the rest of the season.

In the summer of 1969 he returned to Fenerbahçe a second time and was on a team poster created during the preparations for the season, but played no role in the team planning of coach Traian Ionescu . After he remained without a competitive game until the end of October 1969, he asked Ionescu for a release and moved to the second division Adanaspor . So Öztuna switched to the southern Turkish representative Adanaspor for a salary of 50,000 lira.

While his activity in the 1970/71 season remained undocumented, he ended his active career in 1971. In 1974 Fenerbahçe denied him a farewell game, so famous celebrities like Müjdat Gezen organized a farewell game for Öztuna.

National team

Öztuna began his national team career in 1955 with a commitment for the Turkish U-18 national team career. For this selection he completed three more games by September 1958. In the last game, however, he was well over 18 years old.

On November 25, 1956, Öztuna was nominated for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team by the national coach Cihat Arman as part of a test match against the Czechoslovak national team and completed his first and only A international match in this encounter. In this game, which ended in a 1-1 draw, he also scored his team's goal.

In 1958 he also played a game for the Turkish B national team, the second selection of the Turkish national team at the time.

Coaching career

Öztuna began to train the newly founded Istanbul club Çengelköy Talimhane Kulübü (Çengelköy TK for short) in the summer of 1981 and worked as a coach for the first time. Resignation.

After he was the assistant coach of Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the summer of 1983 , there was no cooperation. Instead, Öztuna took over Çengelköy TK again in autumn 1983.

In the summer he was appointed deputy head of the Turkish national youth teams behind Serpil Hamdi Tüzün . After about a year in this position, he was appointed assistant coach of the Turkish national team in the summer of 1985 and assisted the new head coach Kálmán Mészöly . After this coach handed over his position to Coşkun Özarı after two international matches , Öztuna assisted Özarı from then on.

Parallel to his activities in the Turkish national team, Öztuna began working briefly at Fenerbahçe as a scout in early 1986.

From April 1987 he began to work as the head coach of the Turkish U-21 national team . He shared this role with Tınaz Tırpan . After Tırpan was appointed the new head coach of the Turkish national team in the spring of 1988, Öztuna began to assist him as an assistant coach.

For the 1988/989 season, Öztuna was presented together with Ömer Kaner at Fenerbahçe Istanbul as one of the two assistant coaches from head coach Todor Veselinović . After Öztuna became champion in the role of assistant coach with Fenerbahçe, he fell out in the pre-season preparation camp with Veselinović. A short time later he announced his resignation. Years later, Öztuna cited his meniscus discomfort as the main reason for his resignation.

In the 1990s he worked as a scout.
