Can Bartu (born January 31, 1936 in Kadıköy , Istanbul , † April 12, 2019 ) was a Turkish football and basketball player . Through his many years of successful and sporting achievements for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is considered a Fenerbahçe sports legend and one of the outstanding personalities in Turkish sports history. He is one of five players who are named in the official Fenerbahçe march. He was the first and to date the only Turkish professional athlete who played for both the Turkish football and basketball national teams at the same time.

His nickname was "Signor Bartu" because of his fashionable clothing style and six years of residence in Italy . Bartu excelled as a soccer and basketball player. As a professional footballer, he was considered a technically adept and talented winger who could play on both sides on both sides.

Youth department

He began his career at the age of eleven as a basketball player at Modaspor , where he played for the youth teams. Then the basketball department of Fenerbahçe SK became aware of Bartu's talent and took him in 1949 in their basketball youth team. Furthermore, Bartu rose to the senior national team at the age of 17 and played a total of six times for the Turkish national basketball team .

In 1955, the Fenerbahçe youth football team was missing two football players, and two athletes were assigned from the basketball department, including Bartu himself. The next day he scored the 0-1 away win against Edirne's national team in his first appearance for the youth football team. In addition, Bartu recommended himself in a preparatory game against the youth soccer team from Karşıyaka SK , where he scored seven goals with the team, for the professional soccer team. Professional football career

Fenerbahçe professional football coach Fikret Arıcan recognized his athletic talent and successfully persuaded him to continue playing at Fenerbahçe. Initially he acted temporarily and occasionally as a basketball player. Bartu started out as a professional football player in attacking midfield and left wing in 1956 .

In 1957 he made sporting headlines in the media , which are still often told as legends today. In 1970 he ended his active football career and scored 62 league goals in 162 league games throughout his time for Fenerbahçe, but in total Bartu scored 162 goals in at least 326 games.

National soccer team

Between 1956 and 1969, Bartu was a total of 28 national football players in Turkey .

In the qualifying eighth final for the European Football Championship in 1960 , he replaced the injured goalkeeper Turgay Şeren as a field player in the first leg in the last seven minutes of the game, in the 2-0 score for Romania . Life after the professional athlete career

After 1970, after his active professional sports career, Bartu later worked as a columnist and TV sports commentator , for example for the daily newspaper Hürriyet and for the official television station of Fenerbahçe SK (FB-TV).

In 2009 he was the ambassador for the last UEFA Cup final ( 2008/09 ), which was played in the Fenerbahçe stadium in Istanbul.

The training ground on which the Fenerbahçe football team does their daily training was named after him in the summer of 2009 after a Fenerbahçe club council meeting, the "Can Bartu Tesisleri".

Bartu died at home on the night of April 11th to April 12th, 2019 at the age of 83. On the same day, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) decided to put a minute of silence for him before every professional football game until April 15, 2019 . The following day, a funeral service was held in Fenerbahçe Istanbul's stadium, Ülker Stadyumu , in honor of Can Bartu, and his coffin was laid out.
