Ekrem İmamoğlu (2019)

Ekrem İmamoğlu (born June 4, 1970 in Akçaabat , Trabzon Province ) is a Turkish politician of the Republican People's Party (CHP). He was elected Lord Mayor of the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul on June 23, 2019 and took office on June 27, 2019 after the outcome of the March 2019 election was challenged.

Life

İmamoğlu attended high school in Trabzon and studied business administration (Bachelor) and Human Resources (Master) at Istanbul University . He joined his family's construction company and became a member of the CHP in 2008. In the local elections in 2014 he stood for his party in Beylikdüzü and was elected mayor of the district with almost 50%.

In the 2019 local elections , he was nominated as a CHP candidate for the post of Lord Mayor of Istanbul and won by 13,000 votes. After the defeated AKP in Istanbul requested a recount of the votes, the Turkish Electoral Commission (YSK) declared him Lord Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality on April 17, 2019. The AKP lodged a complaint; on May 6, 2019, the electoral commission canceled the election result due to alleged irregularities. In the new election on June 23, 2019, he received almost 800,000 votes more than Binali Yıldırım (AKP) and was re-elected Lord Mayor.

İmamoğlu is married and has three children.

In the office of the Lord Mayor

In the election campaign for the mayoral election in 2019 , İmamoğlu tried to avoid the issue of Syrian refugees in Turkey, which the CHP believes should be gradually and safely returned. After anti-Syrian riots broke out in the Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul in July as a result of false claims, he declared that the interests of the Turkish people must be protected. In another context, he warned that the Istanbul culture would be displaced by the immigrants.

He laid off 1,244 of the city's 2,500 workers who were hired between March 31, 2019 and June 23, 2019. The appointments had been made in the period between the national local elections on March 31 and the re-election of the mayor in Istanbul.

In the first three months in office, İmamoğlu cut financial contributions to several AKP-affiliated religious foundations and associations. They include the TÜRGEV foundation founded by President Erdoğan , which supports students with scholarships and dormitories, the TÜGVA educational foundation, of which their son Bilal is a member, and the Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi Foundation, headed by the brother of Kadir Topbaş , the long-standing AKP - Lord Mayor of the City. He also terminated leasing contracts for company cars, some of which were made available to people close to the AKP for private use or which should have been rented by companies close to the AKP at higher prices than usual. This saves the city around eight million euros a year.

Under Istanbul senin (for example: Istanbul is yours ), the municipality published a website under İmamoğlu on which citizens can express their opinion on the design of the city, for example. A new planning office was also founded on February 12, 2020. The inaugural event was titled A New Beginning for Local Democracy .
