Aydın Yelken (born May 3, 1939 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player . He is associated with these clubs through his longstanding activity for Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Karagümrük SK .

Player career

society

The beginnings of Yelken's football playing career are not well documented. With the club football he started in the youth department of Fenerbahçe Istanbul and was then given in the summer of 1957 to the city rivals club Karagümrük SK . At the time of his move to Karagümrük, there was no international professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ) was considered the most renowned. The three big Istanbul clubs Galatasaray , Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş played in this league . Karagümrük, which also belonged to the ancestral Istanbul clubs of the 2nd İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: 2nd Istanbul Professional League ), the 2nd division of the Istanbul league system. Yelken played with his team only in the preseasonal Federasyon Kupası (German Association Cup ) and then in the 2nd Istanbul league. At this club, several patrons were elected to the board and tried to build the club next to the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş , Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray to the fourth big club. For this purpose, they invested in ensuring that the club rose from the 2nd Istanbul professional league to the 1st Istanbul professional league in the summer of 1958. After the promotion, investments were made in the team again, with Kadri Aytaç, the most popular offensive all-rounder in Turkish football at the time, and the Turkish record transfer fee was paid to Galatasaray for this player. Around Aytaç and the other national players such as Fahrettin Cansever and Tarık Kutver , the club management also signed young players such as Tamer Kaptan and Kutver a year earlier. In the new season, Yelken kept his regular place and together Aytaç and Turhan Bayraktutan formed a successful trio. Thanks to this well-positioned troop, the promoted team managed to establish himself in the top third of the table and played for the championship for a long time. At the end of the season, the team lost touch and finished the league in 3rd place in the table. Yelken completed all 18 league games of his team, but remained without a goal.

From the spring of 1959, Yelken and Karamgümrük took part in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig). This new league replaced the previous regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi. The first season of the Millî Lig was played from February 1959 to June 1959 and ended with a win for Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Karagümrük was far behind in the middle of the table. In the second Milli-Lig season, the team only finished in the middle of the table. At the end of the season, Kadri Aytaç, a key player, left the team. After this departure, Yelken formed together with Ali Soydan , Tuncay Becedek and Kutver the offensive division of his team and scored four league goals himself. In the 1960/61 season, he and his team occupied an important middle position in the table.

In the summer of 1961, Yelken and his teammates Tarık Kutver and Zekai Selli had to do his upcoming military service and, with a few exceptions, his team would be absent for the next 14 months. With a few exceptions approved by the military or during his military leave, when he played for the Turkish senior team and Karamgümrük, he was not fully available to his team again until the spring of 1963. After his return to the team, he quickly won a regular place and, despite his three goals in eight league games, could not prevent his relegation-threatened club from missing relegation at the end of the season. After relegation, those in charge of Karagümrük, including Yelken, did not want to give up any of their players, but with Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş, all three major Istanbul clubs expressed an interest in the international Yelken. Yelken himself quickly reached an agreement with Fenerbahçe and then waited for the two clubs to agree on the move.

In mid-July 1963, Yelken finally moved from Karagümrük to Fenerbahçe and signed a two-year contract with his new club. This change came about although Beşiktaş Karagümrük offered a transfer fee of 80,000 Turkish Lira . At his new club, he immediately conquered a regular place and formed the offensive of his team with Birol Pekel , Şenol Birol , Ogün Altıparmak , Nedim Doğan , Lefter Küçükandonyadis and Mustafa Güven . With his club he was able to win the Turkish championship in 1963/64 . Yelken was the player with the most appearances of his team with 39 competitive games together with Lefter Küçükandonyadis. In addition, with 17 league goals, he was the most successful goalscorer of his team and one of the most successful of the first division season. Through these achievements he was regarded as one of the most important performers of the championship won. In the season 1964/65 he was able to win the Turkish championship again with his team. As a result, his team managed to defend its title in the championship, the first in the club's history. After the season 1. Lig 1965/66 the new title defense in the championship was missed, the club management decided to carry out a roster revision and put next to players like Şenol Birol, Hüseyin Yazıcı , Özer Kanra , İsmail Kurt and Yelken on the sales list.

After Fenerbahçe had put Yelken on the sales list in the summer of 1966, he moved to league rivals Altay Izmir for a transfer fee of 400,000 lira . Yelken also quickly made it a regular player and top performer at the West Turkish club. At the end of the 1966/67 season he finished the league with his new club in 5th place in the table and won the Turkish Cup for the first time in the club's history .

In the summer of 1969 he left Altay after three years and instead switched to city rivals, the second division club Izmirspor . For this club he played until the summer of 1972 and then ended his career.

National team

Yelken began his national team career in September 1958 with a use for the Turkish U-18 national team. After four appearances for the Turkish U-18s, he began to play for the Turkish U-21 national team from 1962 .

On May 14, 1961 he was nominated for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team by national coach Bülent Eken as part of a test match against the Romanian national team and made his international debut in this encounter.

He also played three games for the Turkish B national team between 1959 and 1961, the then second selection of the Turkish national team, and scored one goal.
