Tamer Kaptan (born May 25, 1938 in Istanbul , † February 22, 2003 ibid) was a Turkish football goalkeeper and coach. Although he was never a player for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is associated with this club through his coaching activities for this club.

Player career

society

Kaptan's playing career is only partially known. It is documented that he became part of the squad of the Istanbul club Emniyet SK from the summer of 1956 and was active here for a season. Up to this point in time there was no national league in Turkey, only regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, of which İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League) was the most renowned. Emniyet played as an Istanbul team in the Istanbul professional league and was one of the long-established teams in this league. Kaptan came up with 13 game sets in his first season. In his first season he was also discovered for the Turkish U-18 national team. In his first season, Kaptan was also named one of the fairest players of the past season.

Several large clubs in the league were interested in him. Beşiktaş Istanbul reacted the quickest and signed the young goalkeeper for the summer of 1957. At this club Kaptan failed to prevail against the other two goalkeepers Varol Ürkmez and Oktay Sertel . Instead, he was the third goalkeeper in the professional squad and played exclusively for the club's youth team. Kaptan only made his only appearances for the professional team in a few test matches. In these games he received mostly very negative criticism from the trade press.

Without having played a competitive game for Beşiktaş, Kaptan moved to league rivals Karagümrük SK in the summer of 1958 . At this club, several patrons were elected to the board and tried to build the club next to the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş , Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray to the fourth big club. To this end, they invested in ensuring that the club rose from İstanbul İkinci Küme (German: Second Istanbul League ) to İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi in the summer of 1958 . After the promotion, investments were made again in the team, with Kadri Aytaç, the most popular offensive all-rounder in Turkish football at the time, and the Turkish record transfer fee was paid to Galatasaray for this player. Around Aytaç and the other national players such as Fahrettin Cansever , Tarık Kutver and Aydın Yelken , the club's management also signed young players such as Kaptan. At his new club he won the goalkeeper post straight away. Thanks to this well-positioned troop, the promoted team managed to establish himself in the top third of the table and played for the championship for a long time. At the end of the season, the team lost touch and finished the league in 3rd place in the table.

From the spring of 1959, Kaptan and Karamgümrük took part in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig). Up to this point in time there was no national league in Turkey, only regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, of which İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League) was the most renowned. The first season of the Millî Lig was played from February 1959 to June 1959 and ended with a win for Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Karagümrük was far behind in the middle of the table.

Kaptan played for Karagümrük until the summer of 1961 and then moved within the league to the newly promoted and city rivals Yeşildirek SK . With this club he stayed only one season and then hired at Kasımpaşa Istanbul . At this club he could not prevail against the goalkeeper Özkay Kurtaran and therefore only completed four league games by the end of the season. In the following season he won the goalkeeper post at the start of the season, but lost it again to Kurtaran during the season and came to eleven league games at the end of the season. His team missed relegation and rose to the summer of 1964 in the second-highest Turkish league, which was newly founded in the previous year, in the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi . Since Kurtaran left the club after relegation, Kaptan rose automatically to the goalkeeper, but temporarily lost to the substitute keeper Doğan Erkaya . For Kasımpaşa he played until the summer of 1966 and ended his playing career at this club by switching to coaching.

National team

Kaptan completed a game for the Turkish U-18 national team in 1979. Here he sat as a substitute for Özcan Arkoç , who was set as the goalkeeper, on the bench and did not play a game.

Coaching career

Following his football career , he took over his last club Kasımpaşa Istanbul as head coach and trained uhn a second time until 1968. In the meantime, in 1967, he was replaced by another coach.

In January 1968 he was an assistant coach at Galatasaray Istanbul . In 1968, the Turkish Football Association decided to only allow coaches with a coaching license in the Turkish football leagues. After these developments, Kaptan attended several trainer seminars in order to obtain the necessary trainer license. Galatasaray meanwhile stated that Kaptan will take over the club's B-Elf after obtaining his coaching license.

In August 1971 he took over his former club Karagümrük SK as head coach and trained him for a season.

For the 1972/73 season he was hired as assistant coach at Galatasaray Istanbul and assisted the English head coach Brian Birch . In addition to his work as co-trainer, he also took care of the purchase of new players, trained the team in the pre-season preparatory camp, took care of the organization of the youth department and looked after the team for a long time during the competitive games. The founders for this were that the head coach Birch only returned from England just before the season. Furthermore, the Turkish Football Association gave Birch a coach ban, which is why he could not officially look after the team during the games and Kaptan served as its replacement. against götepe. Galatasaray finished the 1st Lig 1972/73 as champions and Turkish football cup winner and thus reached the Turkish double . With this championship Galatasaray was the third time in a row Turkish champions and was the first team to reach this series. Kaptan was involved in this success as an assistant trainer with an extended range of responsibilities. For the 1973/74 season, his continued work at Galatasaray was confirmed as an assistant coach. Immediately after the game against Boluspor on February 12, 1974, Kaptan got into a scuffle and was arrested by the police. After his arrest, Galatasaray temporarily suspended him. He was later acquitted and returned to Galatasaray. After Birch failed to defend his title in the summer of 1974, the club was looking for a new coach for the coming season. Until the introduction of the new coach Peter Mansell , Kaptan took over the post of head coach on an interim basis and became assistant coach again after Mansell took office. At the end of the 1974/75 season, Kaptan was finally released from Galatasaray.

For the upcoming season, Kaptan then took over the first division club Giresunspor . With this club he finished the season in 6th place in the table and thus reached the best first division placement in the club's history. Despite the successful season at Giresunspor, he moved to the second division Vefa Istanbul for the new season . He then looked after this club for about a year and a half and then announced his resignation in November 1977.

For the 1978/79 season Kaptan took over the second division Kayserispor . Since he confidently reached the autumn championship with this club during the winter break, he was elected coach of the first half of the season by the daily Milliyet . At the end of the season he led his team to the playoff victory of the second division season 1978/79 and thus to promotion to the 1st league . After the rise, he continued to oversee Kayserispor.

After the 7th matchday he resigned from his position at Kayserispor and took over the position of co-coach at Galatasaray and assisted the head coach Turgay Şeren . Kayserispor then only stated that Kaptan would not receive any clearance. The decisive factor in his commitment to Galatasaray was also the fact that at the time of his commitment there was uncertainty as to whether the national football association Şeren will grant a coaching license. After Kaptan's commitment, the association confirmed Şeren as coach. A few days after Kaptan's signing, Kayserispor also announced the release. After Şeren was unable to put the team back on the road to success and the team faced relegation for the first time in its first division history, Seren announced his resignation. After resigning, Şeren was persuaded to continue working. Since Şeren failed to keep up early, he resigned three game days before the end of the season. As a result, Kaptan took over the team on an interim basis. One day after Şeren's resignation, Galatasaray was negotiating with Brian Birch, but was unable to come to an agreement. That is why Kaptan was the only person responsible for the team during the most difficult time in the club's history. Kaptan and his team first scored a 3-0 win against Bursaspor and then a 1-1 draw against Orduspor . Meanwhile, the club's management was working on planning the next season and came to an agreement with Birch. Kaptan then announced before the last match day that he would not work at Galatasaray next season if the club sign Birch for the coming season. After these additional burdens, Kaptan and his team only secured relegation with a 3-0 win on the last matchday against Çaykur Rizespor . Kaptan received very good reviews from the trade press after they had stayed in the league. In addition to the class struggle in the league, he reached the final of the Turkish Football Cup with the team . In the final Galatasaray lost to Altay Izmir . Then he lost with Galatasaray still in Başbakanlık Kupası to arch rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Despite his previous statement, Kaptan agreed to work as an assistant coach for the next season and to assist Birch. With Birch he trained Galatasaray until the end of the season and finished the season with the team in third. Birch remained head coach for the next season, but no agreement could be found with Kaptan.

After saying goodbye to Galatasaray, Kaptan started the new season without employment. After the 3rd game day he replaced the old coach Halil Güngördü at the first division club Gaziantepspor . He coached this club until March 1982 and then left the club after slipping into the relegation zone with it.

In August 1983 Kaptan took over the second division Altınordu Izmir and looked after them for a season. He finished the league with his club in 3rd place in the table.

For the season 1984/85 he came into conversation as head coach at the first division club Gençlerbirliği Ankara . In June 1984 his commitment to this club was announced. After his team lost 3-0 to Altay Izmir on the first match day of the season , he separated amicably after a conversation with İlhan Cavcav .

In February 1985 he took over at the second division Tarsus İdman Yurdu Erkutspor . With this club played for the champions of the league for a long time, but lost important points in the last few days of the game and was fourth with three points. In the next season he continued as the coach of Tarsus İY. In the second division season 1985/86 , his team delivered a head-to-head race with Boluspor long with Boluspor and finished the league tied to this in 2nd place in the table. Tarsus İY had the better goal difference with 13 more goals, but in a direct comparison Boluspor was the better team and therefore rose as champions.

For the 1986/87 season Kaptan took over the second division Karşıyaka SK . With this club he reached the championship of the second division season 1986/87 and thus promotion to the 1st Lig . He made sure that the traditional club returned to the highest Turkish league after a sixteen-year absence. Promoted to the 1st Lig he extended his contract with Karşıyaka. In the summer of 1987, in the Golden and Silver Man of the Year competition , which was sponsored by Ziraat Bankası , in the Rukrik Best Trainer behind Mustafa Denizli, he was named the second best trainer to be the Silver Man . In the first season after promotion, Kaptan made sure that his club was one of the surprise teams in the league and ended the season in 7th place in the table. In the 1998/98 season Karşıyaka started with Kaptan as a coach. After the 6th game day, Kaptan announced his resignation at Karşıyaka after collecting twelve points with the club.

For the 11th matchday of the same season, he then took over league rivals Sakaryaspor . This club won the Turkish Football Cup last year and qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . In addition to the national competitions, Kaptan also played with his team in this cup. In the first round Sakaryaspor met the Hungarian representative Békéscsaba 1912 Előre SE and prevailed against him. In the second round, the club met the German representative Eintracht Frankfurt and was eliminated from the competition with two defeats. The league ended Kaptan with his club in 10th place in the table. At the end of the season, Kaptan parted ways with Sakaryaspor.

Before the 1990/91 season, the second division Göztepe Izmir announced that they were suitable for a cooperation with Kaptan. A few days Kaptan began his work at Göztepe. He looked after this association until January 1991 and then resigned. Before the start of the second half of the season, he took over Karşıyaka SK again and replaced the German-Turkish coach Yılmaz Vural . After he could not free the strongly relegation-threatened club from the relegation zone, he was dismissed by the club's management and replaced a little later by Hüseyin Hamamcı .

Kaptan died on February 22, 2003 in his native Istanbul of the consequences of his illness. He was previously diagnosed with lung cancer.
