Varol Ürkmez (born January 1, 1937 in Adapazarı ) is a former Turkish football goalkeeper , actor and bon vivant . Although he had also worked for arch-rival Galatasaray Istanbul , he is mainly associated with Beşiktaş Istanbul and Altay Izmir . In addition to his football career, he was mainly noticed because of his numerous affairs, his lush nightlife and his gambling addiction and was therefore a popular figure in the tabloids . It was always assumed that to please the spectators and the press, he often showed goalkeeper parades with exaggerated flight inserts, which is why he received the ironic nickname Uçan Kaleci (German: The Flying Goalkeeper ). He himself attributed this to his concentration within the game and contradicted the allegations. During his playing days he was also known as Madrid panteri ( Eng . The Panther of Madrid ) due to his convincing performances against the Spanish top club Real Madrid .

Family and childhood

Ürkmez was born as the son of train dispatcher Hüseyin Ürkmez and housewife Nesibe Ürkmez in the western Turkish city of Adapazarı in 1937. His father worked at the Arifiye station on the Anatolian Railway . Ürkmez lost his father when he was ten, so his mother was forced to support the family on her own. After the death of his father, the family moved to Ürkmez's uncle in Istanbul . He then took care of the family.

Player career

The first years and Beşiktaş Istanbul

Ürkmez started playing football in the streets of Istanbul. He was quickly used mainly in goal by the older boys. He himself also came to terms with the fact that he always had to stand in goal and became a big fan of the then national goalkeeper Turgay Şeren . During these games, local amateur clubs became aware of Ürkmez. So he started playing for Selimiye SK from 1950 and switched to Sultantepe SK after two years . 1953 Ürkmez took part in a selection tournament in Beşiktaş Istanbul . In the tournament held in the legendary Şeref Stadium , Ürkmez conceded a total of six goals and promised himself no chances of being excluded from the Beşiktaş team. To his surprise, the chief scout Sadri Usuoğlu , himself a former player legend Beşiktaş ', sent all tournament participants home and selected Ürkmez of all people. Usuoğlu, however, assumes that Ürkmez should definitely continue his school career. On the evening of this tournament, Ürkmez said nothing about his new job at home. The next day he skipped school and went to Beşiktaş training instead. After his uncle found out from the newspaper that Ürkmez had gone to Beşiktaş training instead of school, he was violent against his nephew and forbade him to play football. Ürkmez did not let himself be dissuaded from his will to become a football player and managed to participate in the training despite the supervision of his family.

For the 1954/55 season Ürkmez was added to the squad of the first team by head coach Sandro Puppo . At the time of his admission to the Beşiktaş 'first team, there was no national professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara , Izmir and Eskişehir , of which the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi or also known as İstanbul Profesyonel Küme (German: Istanbul Professional League ) was considered the most renowned. Ürkmez was accepted as a replacement for the goalkeeper Bülent Gürbüz in the squad and competed with Ergun Aker for the replacement keeper post. Ürkmez made his debut for Beşiktaş during the game in the Istanbul professional league on November 6, 1954 against Kasımpaşa Istanbul . In this game he played the full length of the game. In the further course of the season he was used in four other games. This season, his team fought head-to-head for the championship with arch rivals Galatasaray Istanbul throughout the season . At the end of the season, Ürkmez 'team finished the league tied and with the same goal difference as Galatasaray and only became runner-up due to the direct comparison. In the next season, the team competed again with Galatasaray for the Istanbul championship and this time awarded it clearly three points behind. Ürkmez increased his league stakes to seven games. In the 1956/57 season , Ürkmez Gürbüz finally ousted as a regular goalkeeper and played almost all of his team's competitive games. In the league, the club remained far behind from the top of the table with no title ambitions. After the end of the season, Beşiktaş took part in the Federasyon Kupası (German Association Cup), with Ürkmez being used in all twelve encounters during this tournament. His team was tournament winner, which Ürkmez was able to win his first title at club level. The next season was similar. Again the championship was gambled away early and the association cup was won again. Ürkmez again played almost all of his team's games.

By winning the association cup of the 1957/58 season Beşiktaş qualified for the European Cup of National Champions of the 1958/59 season . In the first round of this tournament, Beşiktaş faced the then very strong Spanish top club Real Madrid . Beşiktaş was seen as a blatant underdog against the Madrilenians, who were made up of such stars as Alfredo Di Stéfano , Ferenc Puskás , Francisco Gento and Raymond Kopa , and the Istanbul team were predicted to lose clear in both games. At the beginning of this season, Beşiktaş signed Necmi Mutlu, one of the league's most promising young goalkeepers. At Beşiktaş, many club officials felt disrupted by Ürkmez's private life and his dubious image and intended to replace him with Mutlu in the course of the new season. Ürkmez then made an effort in training and was appointed goalkeeper by head coach Leandro Remondini , who also valued Ürkmez as a person. On the day of the first game in the European Cup against Real Madrid, which was played in Madrid, eight club officials tried again to persuade Remondini to set up the more sedate Mutlu instead of Ürkmez. After a fierce controversy between the two parties, the latter opposed the demands, even threatened the officials with his resignation and pushed through his decision to field Ürkmez against Real Madrid. Ürkmez went to the field of the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu , which was sold out with 110,000 spectators, as part of the starting eleven and, according to his own statements, felt very intimidated by the stadium atmosphere. In the first few minutes he took a volley shot out of the top corner with a jump. During this jump, his lower leg brushed the crossbar. By half time, Ürkmez prevented 10 to 15 unsustainable shots on goal. In the second half he showed another very successful performance, but could not prevent the goals of Juan Santisteban and Kopa. After the end of the game he was applauded by the opposing spectators and celebrated as a hero in Turkey. In the second leg, Ürkmez convinced again and played a major role in the prestigious 1-1 draw of his team. Due to his convincing good performance in both games, he was hailed by the trade press as Madrid panteri ( Eng . The Panther of Madrid ). This name is an allusion to the nickname Turgay Şerens , who was nicknamed Berlin panteri (German: The Panther of Berlin ) after Turkey's 2-1 win against the German team in the Berlin Olympic Stadium . These achievements also contributed significantly to Ürkmez being voted Sportsman of the Year by the daily Milliyet . In the Ürkmez league, Mutlu clearly prevailed and played almost all of his team's games as a regular goalkeeper, but again remained without a title with his team.

In the spring of 1959, the Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig), Turkey's first nationwide national league, was founded. This league replaced the regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as B. the Istanbul professional league, as the highest and only Turkish league. From the Istanbul professional league, the first eight teams, including Beşiktaş, were accepted into this league. So Ürkmez played with Beşiktaş from then on in this league. In this league too, Ürkmez continued to play as a regular goalkeeper despite the new coach Hüseyin Saygun . After his appearances in the European Cup, Real Madrid tried to sign Ürkmez and quickly reached an agreement with both Beşiktaş and Ürkmez. Immediately after this oral settlement, Ürkmez experienced a marital argument at home. During this controversy, he broke a pane of glass with a punch in anger and suffered a serious hand injury as a result. This injury ensured that Real Madrid decided against a commitment and that Beşiktaş finally removed him from the squad.

In the summer of 1959, Ürkmez Beşiktaş asked for his transfer fee. Since the club wanted to get rid of Ürkmez, but at the same time wanted to prevent him from switching to one of its Istanbul arch-rivals, the transfer fee for clubs from Izmir and Ankara was set at 20,000 Turkish lira . After the healing of his hand injury, which many had predicted the end of his career, he lied to Izmir in the summer of 1960. Before he did that, he asked a sports journalist friend to spread his person transfer rumors with the various clubs in the city. As a result, he tried to raise his market value and draw the clubs' attention to himself. First Ürkmez negotiated with Karşıyaka SK .

Since Ürkmez was officially still a player from Beşiktaş, he was in the 1959/60 season without use with his team Turkish champions . With Beşiktaş he also took part in a summer training camp. As part of this camp, the team also took part in the post-seasonal Cemal Gürsel Cup , a cup dedicated to the then Turkish Prime Minister Cemal Gürsel . Ürkmez completed five games for Beşiktaş during this tournament.

Altay Izmir

In the summer of 1960, Ürkmez finally left Beşiktaş and moved to Altay Izmir . Altay paid in addition to the transfer fee Ürkmez a salary of over 100,000 lira. Since Ürkmez was a nationally known personality due to its excessive nightlife, the club also speculated on increasing audience numbers.

At his new club he rose straight away to the goalkeeper and held this position until he left in the summer of 1968. During these eight years he reached the 4th place in the 1st league twice with his team and was once the Turkish Cup winner . Ürkmez also recommended himself again for the Turkish national team due to his good performances.

Galatasaray Istanbul

In the summer of 1967 left the Turkish giants Galatasaray with Turgay Şeren , Bülent Gürbüz and Yervant Balcı all three goalkeepers the club. While Şeren ended his career, the 36-year-old Gürbüz moved to the second division Boluspor and Balcı to the second division Samsunspor . For the new season, the club signed next to the Yugoslav goalkeeper Tatomir Radunović , the two young goalkeepers Yasin Özdenak and Faruk Özceylan . The head coach at the time chose the 19-year-old Özdenak as the goalkeeper. This completed by far the most competitive games for his team. In the summer, Radunović and Özceylan were transferred to other clubs and instead Nihat Akbay and the veteran Ürkmez signed. In addition, a new coach was hired with Tomislav Kaloperović . He left last season's goalkeeper Özdenak on the bench and handed over his position to Akbay. As his replacement, Ürkmez advanced, who represented Akbay in six games during the season.

Under this coach, the hoped-for championship succeeded, whereby Ürkmez could win this title for the second time. In addition, the team won the President's Cup at the end of the season . In the new season, the team experienced a very turbulent season, in which the coach and some players had several controversies. Ürkmez 'team ended the season without a title; The only bright spot was reaching the quarter-finals in the European Cup in 1969/70 . Ürkmez completed a total of six games for his club this season.

December 1969, Varol came into conflict with the law. According to his own statements, he lent the two foreign hippies who traveled to Turkey with their '65 Volkswagen Beetle 6,000 lira. The hippies gave him their VW Beetle as a deposit for this sum. Since the importation of foreign cars into Turkey was strictly regulated at that time, the tax office intervened and sued Ürkmez for illegal car trade and tax evasion. So he was invited to the nearest police station and interrogated for two days. Following these developments, Ürkmez was arrested early next year and was imprisoned until the day of his trial. During this time the departure from Galatasaray was certain, so that several clubs made attempts to oblige Ürkmez. He was later released on parole until the day of his trial.

Manisaspor, Gençlerbirliği Ankara and Tekelspor

Because last season the two young goalkeepers Özdenak and Akbay had almost completely divided all competitive games between themselves and Ürkmez was no longer viable because of his pending court hearing, Galatasaray suggested a move to the 32-year-old. So he spent the 1970/71 season on loan from the second division club Manisaspor .

His trial was held in April 1971. Ürkmez was sentenced to five years' imprisonment plus an additional fine of 10,000 lira. After the 1970/71 season he left Galatasaray for good and moved to another second division club in Gençlerbirliği Ankara . Ürkmez only played half a season at this club and then went to prison.

From 1974 Ürkmez played for the club Tekelspor , the operating team of the state spirits manufacturer. During one game, Ürkmez and his team met İETT SK , the team that led the future Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the squad. In that game Erdoğan scored a goal against Ürkmez. In 1977 he finished with a farewell game at Tekelspor on Ürkmez 'old club Altay met his career. Due to the great popularity of Ürkmez, luminaries of Turkish football such as Cemil Turan , Sanlı Sarıalioğlu , Yasin Özdenak , Gökmen Özdenak , Vedat Okyar and Ziya Şengül appeared at the farewell game and wore the jersey of Tekelsporz for Ürkmez. After this farewell, however, he returned to football and played for Tekelspor until the early 1980s.

National team

Ürkmez began his career with the Turkish national teams in 1954 with a commitment for the Turkish U-18 national team. As part of the UEFA youth tournament in 1954, Ürkmez was nominated for the Turkish U-18 team and played almost all of his team's tournament games. In the group stage of the tournament held in Germany , the Turkish selection confidently prevailed against Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg as first in the table and reached the semi-finals. In the semifinals, the team met host Germany. Against the team around goal scorer Uwe Seeler, Ürkmez's team lost 2-1 after a hard-fought game and had to face Argentina in the game for third place. The team lost this game 1-0 and finished the tournament fourth.

In the senior team, he was almost always left behind against the other two goalkeepers Şükrü Ersoy and Turgay Şeren and was usually the third goalkeeper in the squad. Only in the test match on December 18, 1958 against the Czechoslovak national team , the undisputed Şeren was injured. The Turkish national coach Leandro Remondini , who was also the head coach of Ürkmez's former club Beşiktaş Istanbul, set Ürkmez against Czechoslovakia. After this international A debut, Ürkmez was out due to injury for a long time and also experienced a troubled time at his club.

After he had slowly returned to his old strength at his new club Altay Izmir, he played with the second selection of the Turkish national team , the Turkish B national team, against the second selection of Bulgaria. In 1964 and 1965 he played again for the senior national team.

He made his last international match on October 9, 1965 against the Czechoslovak national team.

Acting career

Ürkmez met many filmmakers through its nightlife, its high popularity and its presence in the tabloids. Over time, these offered Ürkmez leading roles in their films. In 1963, Ürkmez accepted the offer from Sırrı Gültekin and played the lead role in his film Kavgasız Yaşayalım . Up to the summer of 1975 he played in four other cinema productions and during this time worked with the then very popular film stars Münir Özkul , Ali Şen , Sami Hazinses , Sevda Ferdağ , Ahmet Mekin , Kenan Pars , Selma Güneri , Tanju Okan , Öztürk Serengil , Güzin Özipek , Meral Orhonsay , Tamer Yiğit and Selçuk Ural .
