Vedat Okyar (born August 1, 1945 in Bursa , † July 20, 2009 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish football player and commentator. Through his many years of work for Beşiktaş Istanbul , he is very strongly associated with this club. On fan and club pages he is seen as one of the legendary players in club history. He played much of the time Beşiktaş 'in which the club could not win the Turkish Championship for 15 seasons . During this time he wore the captain's armband from time to time and was therefore referred to by Beşiktaş supporters as Büyük Kaptan (German: The Great Captain ) until his death . From 1981 he began to work as a football expert in daily newspapers and on television and was one of the most popular football commentators around Beşiktaş until his death.

Player career

Even as a small child, Okyar showed great interest in playing football and spent most of his free time on the football field . Here those responsible for İnegöl İdman Yurdu (later İnegölspor ) became aware of him and recruited him. At his new club he quickly asserted himself and achieved the championship of the Bursa Amatoer 1. Ligi with such teammates as İsmail Arca , Hayrettin Endersert , who would later all become important players of their time .

From the summer of 1964 he began to play for the club Bursaspor , which had only been founded a year earlier , and took part with this club in the second-highest Turkish league, which was then named as Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi , a year ago . At this club, he quickly established himself as a regular player. With players like Mustafa Güvenç , Ersel Altıparmak and Mesut Şen , he formed the offensive of his team. Over the entire course of the second division season 1964/65 , Okyars team delivered a head-to-head race for the 2nd Turkish second division championship with the traditional Istanbul club Vefa SK . At the end of the season the championship was awarded with equal points, but the worse goal difference to Vefa. In the following season, Okyar played again with his team for a long time for the second division championship, this time the league ended in 3rd place in the table and missed the hoped-for promotion to the 1st league . Okyar scored three goals this season and provided a number of assists for his team's strikers. Finally, in the second division season 1966/67, the hoped-for championship and thus promotion to the 1st league succeeded. Under the direction of head coach Sabri Kiraz , the team prevailed with a two-point lead against Samsunspor . Okyar was instrumental in this success through many assists. In the first first division season in the club's history, Okyar's team caused a surprise and ended the league as a newcomer in sixth place in the table.

Favored by the fact that Okyar's father, who was active in the textile industry, also worked as a club official at Beşiktaş Istanbul , Okyar switched to this club in the summer of 1968. At this club he quickly established himself as a regular player, was one of the most important performers for almost his entire time with Beşiktaş and temporarily acted as team captain. Until he left Beşiktaş, he had almost no chance in the Turkish championship with this club. Only in the 1973/74 season did Okyar's team head-to-head for the Turkish championship with arch rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Besides this national championship, Okyar and his team were able to win all other competitions in Turkish football at least once.

For the 1976/77 season Oktay left Beşiktaş after eight years and moved to the second division club Diyarbakırspor . With this club Okyar succeeded at the end of the season in the second division championship and thus promotion to the 1st league. Despite this success, Okyar left Diyarbakırspor and hired for the next season at Istanbul third division club Karagümrük SK . He played here until the summer of 1980 and then ended his career.

National team

Okyar began his international career in 1965 with a deployment of the Turkish U-18 national team. Although he was over 18 at the time, he played three more times for the Turkish U-18s in the same year.

In 1968 Okyar started playing for the Turkish U-21 national team. After three U-21 appearances, he was nominated in 1969 by the then head coach of the Turkish national team , Abdulah Gegić , also in the senior squad and made his senior international debut in the friendly against the Polish national team . Although he was older than 31, he played three more times for the Turkish U-21s in 1969.

On the occasion of the Mediterranean Games in 1993, he was appointed to the squad of the Olympic selection of Turkey, which also looked after Terim. Topçu completed two matches in this tournament and won the gold medal with his team.

In 1972 Okyar played two qualifying matches for the European Championship in 1972 .

death

In early 2009, Okyar was diagnosed with lung cancer. On July 20, 2009, Okyar succumbed to the consequences of this disease. He was buried in Istanbul's Teşvikiye Mosque in the Zincirlikuyu Cemetery the next day after the midday prayer . At his funeral, besides the leadership of Beşiktaş 'association, many celebrities and politicians were also present.

Every year a prayer takes place at his grave, which is attended by some of Beşiktaş's club officials and many fans.
