society

Şengül was born in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul in 1948 and began playing club football in 1958 in the Turkish capital Ankara with the first division club PTT . It was here that the Turkish national coaches noticed him in 1961 and was nominated for the Turkish U-18 national team in 1961. In 1962 he was accepted into the professional squad at the age of eighteen and completed only one league and one cup game in his first season in the Millî Lig 1962/63 . In his second season he immediately conquered a regular place and completed 27 league games in which he scored five times.

This performance at PTT became one of the shooting stars of the season and caught the attention of the major Istanbul clubs. Of those, Fenerbahçe Istanbul reacted the fastest and signed Şengül for the summer of 1964. In his first season at Fenerbahçe, he immediately found a place in the regular team under English coach Oscar Hold and with his 12 hits in 27 league games played a key role in winning the Turkish Mastery . Thus, Şengül also achieved his first title win. Fenerbahçe also started the new season with Hold, but after collecting only three points in four games, Hold was replaced by Selahattin Torkal . Şengül only used it sporadically and was replaced by Necdet Erdem after six weeks . Erdem did not let Şengül play for a long time, but started using him regularly from March 1966. Fenerbahçe started the new season with another coach change and hired Abdullah Gegiç . Under this coach, Şengül came only sporadically and completed eleven league games in which he scored once.

In the 1967/68 season , the Hungarian coach Ignác Molnár took over the post of head coach and used Şengül as a regular player from the start. At the beginning of the season you could defeat AEK Athens in the final of the Balkan Cup and win an international title. The season ended by winning the Turkish Championship and the Turkish Football Cup . That was the double .

The next three seasons Şengül consolidated his position within the team and rose to team captain. In terms of sport, they were left behind against arch rivals Galatasaray Istanbul , who were the first team to win the championship three times in a row with their three consecutive championships. Only in the summer of 1973 could Fenerbahçe win the Cumhurbaşkanlığı Kupası with a 1: 2 victory over Galatasaray . In the 1973/74 season , Şengül and his team were able to get the Turkish double again . In the 1974/75 season you could defend the Turkish championship and win the Cumhurbaşkanlığı Kupası. With the end of the 1974/75 season, Şengül said goodbye to a farewell game played on August 3, 1975 against Trabzonspor from the football stage.

National team

Şengül played for the Turkish national team for the first time during his time at PTT , for the Turkish U-18 national team on March 20, 1961 in a friendly match against the Israeli U-18 national team.

He was subsequently not nominated for the national teams for three years. It was only when he switched to Fenerbahçe Istanbul that he noticed the people in charge of the national teams and received his first international nomination for a test match against the Bulgarian national teams on December 20, 1964, and made his debut during this game. After this game he remained without an international match nomination for about a year and was then nominated in the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team in September 1965 and also made his debut in the game against the Polish U-21s .

The following five years he was not considered by the reigning national coaches such as Sandro Puppo , Adnan Süvari and Abdullah Gegiç and remained without a nomination. Only with the national coach Cihat Arman , under whom Şengül made his international debut six years ago and so far only appearance, was he regularly considered again. After this change in coach he was a regular player for about five years. He took part with the national team in the qualification of the European Football Championship 1972 , qualification of the Football World Cup 1974 , qualification of the European Football Championship 1976 , but could not qualify with his team for any of the teams. In 17 of his 21 international appearances, he wore the captain's armband.

He made his last international match on April 30, 1975 during a European Championship qualifier against the Swiss national team .

Coaching career

After the end of his football career, Şengül stayed away from football for about four years and in November 1979 took over the position of head coach at Fenerbahçe Istanbul from the dismissed Şükrü Ersoy . He stayed in this position until the end of the season and then left the club. For the new season he was followed by the German trainer Friedel Rausch .

In 1986, after Kálmán Mészöly's dismissal, he was in charge of Fenerbahçe again on an interim basis.
