Selahattin Torkal (* 1925 in Istanbul ; † November 16, 2010 ibid) was a Turkish football player and official. He is remembered for his long stint at Fenerbahçe Istanbul and is considered one of the most legendary players by fans and clubs alike. For the club he was active as a football player, coach and club official.

Career

Childhood and youth

Torkal was born in Fatih, Istanbul in 1925 as the son of an officer. His father held the position of kolağasıs in the Turkish armed forces , a rank that was between captain and major . After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, his family moved from the then Albanian city of Durrës to Istanbul. Due to his father's work, the family moved to the Turkish capital Ankara and lived here in the immediate vicinity of Cebeci Çayırı, a football field in the capital that was very popular at the time . The boy Selahattin and his younger brother Celal Torkal , who would later pursue a professional career and play for Ankara Demirspor and Galatasaray Istanbul , began playing soccer on this soccer field. In Ankara he attended the Ataturk Gymnasium (Turkish: Ankara Ataturk Lisesi ). In addition to his school career, he also played for the school team and took part in the Turkish football championship of high schools with them. During the tournament, his team prevailed against the school team of the Izmir Ataturk Lisesi and Galatasaray grammar schools and became Turkish football champions of the grammar schools.

society

After Torkal had drawn attention to himself through his achievements during the Turkish football championship of the high schools, he was sent by Niyazi Sel with a letter of recommendation to Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Sel had played for Fenerbahçe in the 1920s and 1930s and then settled in Ankara. At Fenerbahçe, Torkal was immediately accepted into the squad and also attended the renowned Istanbul Boğaziçi Gymnasium (Turkish Boğaziçi Lisesi ). At that time Torkal did a lot of school sport in addition to his soccer activities and won the Turkish high school championships in several disciplines.

Torkal came for Fenerbahçe in the 1944/45 season in the game of October 1, 1944 of the İstanbul Ligi (German Istanbul League ) against arch-rivals Galatasaray Istanbul and made his debut in men's football. Since there was no national professional league in Turkey at that time, regional leagues existed instead in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which İstanbul Ligi (also called İstanbul Futbol Ligi) was considered the most renowned. Torkal completed ten more league appearances this season and scored three goals. His club ended the season with five points, far behind arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul as runner-up. In addition, from March 1945 he and his team took part in the Cup of the Ministry of Education , a kind of tournament designed and irregularly held national championship in which the teams from the three cities of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir participated. In this tournament Torkal was used in 12 out of a possible 14 games and won the tournament with his team. He also took his team to the Prime Minister Cup . The following season ended similarly for Torkal and his team. Again the championship was finished behind Beşiktaş as runner-up and instead the title in the Cup of the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister's Cup was defended.

In the 1946/47 season , Torkal's team with Beşiktaş and Vefa Istanbul was a head-to-head race for the Istanbul championship over the entire season. In the end, Fenerbahçe prevailed with one point ahead of Beşiktaş and tied on points but with the better goal difference over Vefa. As a result, Torkal secured his first championship, where he was used in eleven league games this season. He missed defending the title in the two other cups with his club. The following season, the 1947/48 season , Torkal and his team managed to defend their title in the championship. In the following three seasons Torkal and his team remained unsuccessful in the championship and only secured the Cup of the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister's Cup again in the 1949/50 season.

In the spring of 1952 the İstanbul Futbol Ligi was dissolved and transferred to a professional league system. From now on there are the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ) and the second highest division, the İstanbul İkinci Küme (German: Second Istanbul League ). So Fenerbahçe played in this newly designed Istanbul professional league from the spring. After missing the championship in this league, the club experienced a troubled time with a lot of mutual blame. I.a. was a group of players, including Torkal, alleged that failure in the championship. As a result, Torkal left together with his teammates Erol Keskin and Halil Özyazıcı and instead switched to league rivals and newcomers Adalet SK . At his new club he played for the next seven seasons as a regular and top performer. While he and his team always occupied league placements in the middle of the table, he won the Ataturk Kupası with her in 1955 .

From the spring of 1959, Torkal took part with Adalet in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig ). This league was founded in the spring of 1959 as the first nationwide national league in Turkey and replaced the regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as B. the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi, as the highest and only Turkish league. The first season of the Millî Lig was played from February 1959 to June 1959 and ended with a win for Fenerbahçe Istanbul.

Already for the second season of the Millî Lig, the season 1959/60 , Tokal reconciled with Fenerbahçe or the club management and as a result returned to the team of Fenerbahçe. Here he completed only one league game this season and was runner-up with his team. In the 1960/61 season , Tokal's team won the Millî Lig championship. He himself only played two league games this season and was more of a reservist role. After the end of the season, he finally ended his career.

National team

Torkal's national team career began in 1948 with a commitment for the Turkish national team . As part of a friendly against the Greek national team , he was nominated for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team and made his international debut in this match, national coach Ignác Molnár , who was also head coach of Torkal's Fenerbahçe Istanbul at the time .

With the Turkish selection Torkal took part in the 1948 Summer Olympics. In addition, he took part in the Mediterranean Cup with the national team in the summer of 1949 and is second behind the second selection of the Italian national team . In total, he completed nine A internationals and one B internationals.

Coaching career

Torkal should start after his career at Fenerbahçe as a coach either in the youth field or as an assistant coach. Instead, he took the offer from Adalet SK for the 1962/63 season and took over this club as head coach. He left this club before the end of the first half of the season and instead took over city and league rivals Karagümrük SK . He then trained this club until the end of the season.

In August 1964 he was appointed assistant coach of the Turkish national team. In parallel to this activity, Torkal continued to work as a club coach. So he took over the second division Yeşildirek SK during the 1964/65 season . Here he received a two-month suspension from the Turkish Football Association because the referee accused him of having provoked him after a wrong decision. In the meantime, Torkal worked at Adalet SK as a player- coach and was therefore no longer available to this club.

For the 1965/66 season Torkal took over the second division Beylerbeyi SK . He only carried out this activity for a short time. In mid-October 1965 he was appointed head coach Fenerbahçes on an interim basis, after the club had previously dismissed head coach Oscar Hold . At the beginning of December, the club hired Necdet Erdem as a manager. He worked as a manager for the first three months and from the end of March 1966 also took over the post of head coach on an interim basis. Torkal then took over the post of assistant coach and left the club at the end of the season.

After his activities in the years 1966 to 1968 remained unknown, he took over the second division Bandırmaspor for the 1968/69 season . He left this club during the season and instead took over the Istanbul amateur club Çapa SK . With this he won the Istanbul Amateur Championship at the end of the season 1968/69 and then trained it until the summer of 1970.

In the summer of 1970 he was also appointed assistant coach and talent scout for the Turkish national team. He also coached the Turkish U-21 national team . In the New Year 1971 he was replaced in the national teams by other coaches. He himself took over the Istanbul amateur club Tayfun SK in March 1971 .

After Sabri Kiraz was appointed head coach at Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the summer of 1971 , this ensured that Torkal was hired as his assistant coach. Both had played together for Fenerbahçe in the 1940s and had most recently worked together for the Turkish national team. After the team fell behind in the championship towards the end of the season, both Kiraz and Torkal's office were questioned by the club's management. Before the last match day, Kiraz finally announced his resignation after a conversation with the club's management. Torkal took over the team for the last matchday as head coach.

At the end of the 1972/73 season, Torkal also left Fenerbahçe and then began to work as a coach for the second division Iskenderunspor . For the 1973/74 season he was to take over Çapa SK for the second time. After this cooperation did not materialize, Torkal took over his first club Ankara Demirspor together with Erkan Kural .

In December 1974 he was again run as the head coach of Iskenderunspor and punished for an offense by the Turkish Football Association with a 67-day ban. In March 1975 he was introduced to Balıkesirspor as the new head coach. At this club he was replaced by Rıdvan Kösemihal before the end of the season . He himself took over Tekirdağspor the next season . For the 1976/77 season he then took over Balıkesirspor again. For the new season he already trained a new club with Ankara Şekerspor . He finished the 1977/78 season with this club and was then elected coach of the season by the daily Milliyet .

In February 1979 Sariyer GK was appointed head coach. He trained this club until March 1980 and then resigned from his position. Later he coached the club until the end of the season.

For the 1980/81 season he took over the Istanbul second division club Karagümrük SK again. He looked after this club until the end of April 1981 and was then replaced by Ahmet Karlıklı after his resignation . Torkal himself was hired as head coach at the Istanbul amateur club Camialtı SK for the coming season . In the summer of 1982 he started working for Fenerbahçe as a youth coach.

For the 1984/85 season Torkal was hired as head coach at Istanbul third division club Kartalspor . Already at the end of November 1984 he left this club and switched to city and league rivals Bakırköyspor . At the end of the season, he led this club to the third division championship and thus to the first second division participation in the club's history.

Despite winning the championship with Bakırköyspor, Torkal moved to the next season for city and league rivals Kasımpaşa Istanbul . He coached this club until at least March 1987.

After the activities which he remained unknown in the years 1987 to 1989, he took over the third division in spring 1989 Çengelköyspor .
