Fernandão (actually Fernando Lúcio da Costa ; born March 18, 1978 in Goiânia ; † June 7, 2014 in Aruanã ) was a Brazilian football player and coach .
Player career
societies
The 1.90 m tall striker began his professional career in 1997 at Esporte Clube Goiás in his hometown. In 2001 he moved to France to Olympique Marseille and completed 61 games for the club. In 2003 he was loaned to Toulouse FC and returned to Brazil in 2004 to play for Internacional Porto Alegre .
With Internacional he reached 2nd place in the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol in 2005 . In the same year he made his first appearance for the national team, in a game against Guatemala .
In 2006 he led Internacional to win the Copa Libertadores as team captain . Fernandão was the top scorer in the Copa and was named the best player of the final by scoring one goal and preparing another. In December 2006 he won the FIFA Club World Cup with Internacional . In 2008 he moved to the Qatari club Al-Gharafa .
After a season he returned to Brazil and still played for Goiás EC and São Paulo FC .
National team
In 2005 Fernandão was used once in a friendly against Guatemala in the Brazilian national football team .
Trainer / manager career
Fernandão retired from his active career in July 2011 and became Sports Director at Internacional Porto Alegre . After a year he was briefly head coach of the club after Dorival Júnior had been dismissed.
death
Fernandão died on June 7, 2014 at the age of 36 in a helicopter crash near his country estate. His administrator, a councilor from Palmeiras de Goiás and another passenger died with him .
