Anthony Stokes (born July 25, 1988 in Dublin ) is an Irish football player who is under contract with Livingston FC .
Career
At the age of only 15, Stokes moved from Irish club Shelbourne to London for Arsenal's reserve team . He made his debut in the first team when he was substituted on in the League Cup against Sunderland on October 25, 2005 in the 88th minute for Arturo Lupoli . In the summer of 2006 he completed a trial training at Sunderland with the aim of being loaned to the Black cats . The then coach Niall Quinn ultimately decided against his compatriot due to the size of the squad. On August 29, 2006, Stokes was loaned by Arsenal to the Scottish first division club Falkirk until the end of the year .
Falkirk
Stokes scored his first goal for the Bairns in a 1-0 victory in the third round of the League Cup at Inverness Caledonian Thistle on September 19, 2006. On October 21, he was able to mark two more hits against Inverness. On October 28, 2006 Stokes was able to celebrate his first hat-trick at Falkirk's 5-1 over Dundee United and was able to repeat this in the next game against Dunfermline Athletic and had a record of nine goals in just four games. This made Stokes the first player in the history of the Scottish Premier League to score hat tricks in two games in a row. This feat he succeeded again, again against Inverness Caledonian Thistle, in his last game for Falkirk on December 30th in the 3-1 home win for the Bairns .
On November 7, Stokes scored the equalizer for Falkirk in the 100th minute of the CIS Insurance Cup against Celtic , which Falkirk ultimately won 5-4 on penalties. Because of his consistently great shape, he was voted Young Player of the Month for October and November.
By the end of December 2006 he had 16 hits in 18 league and cup games on his account and so league competitor Celtic showed interest in Stokes.
Sunderland
On January 8, 2007, Stokes put an end to the weeks of speculation about his future and signed with Sunderland for a transfer fee of £ 2 million. Celtic and Charlton Athletic had also shown keen interest in the young Irishman, but Stokes reiterated that he was and is heavily influenced by Sunderland coach and former Irish international Roy Keane and that he tipped the scales in favor of the Northerners. Stokes was originally given the shirt number 26, but after the transfer of Jonathan Stead to Sheffield United he got the 9. On January 13, 2007 Stokes made his first game for Sunderland and gave the cross for the decisive goal by David Connolly against Ipswich Town . Stokes scored his first goal for Sunderland as a substitute on February 10, 2007 against Plymouth Argyle .
Hibernian
In August 2009, Stokes' move to the Scottish capital club Hibernian was announced. At the Hibs he meets John Hughes , who already trained him in Falkirk .
Celtic FC
At the beginning of the 2010/11 season, Stokes moved to the top Scottish club and league competitor Celtic FC for 1.45 million euros . The highlight of his engagement so far was Stokes' hat-trick in Celtic's historic 9-0 win over Aberdeen FC .
In January 2016 he was awarded to Scottish second division club Hibernian Edinburgh until the end of the season . For the Hibs , Stokes met twice in the Scottish Cup final against Glasgow Rangers which the capital club won 3-2 in the end. In June 2016, the contract with Celtic was terminated .
