David James Connolly (born June 6, 1977 in Willesden , England ) is a former Irish football player .
Career
Club teams
Connolly began his career at Watford FC in 1994 . In 1997, the only 168 cm tall center forward moved to the Eredivisie for Feyenoord Rotterdam , where he was awarded twice. 1998 at Wolverhampton Wanderers and 1999 at Excelsior Rotterdam . In 2000 the Irishman came back to Feyenoord from Excelsior Rotterdam. After only one year at Feyenoord Rotterdam, Connolly moved to FC Wimbledon . He was there between 2001 and 2003 before West Ham United signed him . In the years 2004 to 2006 Connolly changed clubs three times. In 2004/05 he played for a year at Leicester City and in 2005/06 at Wigan Athletic . From 2006 to 2009 he played at Sunderland AFC.
From October 2009 David Connolly was under contract with Southampton FC . In the 2010/11 season he achieved promotion to the Football League Championship with his team . Connolly moved to Portsmouth FC on New Year's Eve 2012 and is currently playing in Football League Two .
National team
From 1996 to 2004 Connolly played in the Irish national team. In 41 international matches he was able to score nine goals. The Irishman also took part in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , where Ireland lost to Spain in the round of 16 .
