Karabet "Garo" Hamamcıoğlu (born April 24, 1945 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player of Armenian origin and the current chairman of the Taksim SK sports club .

Career

He started his football career at Taksim SK in 1963. He played for the team for two seasons until he was drafted into the Turkish army for military service in 1965 . During his military service he played for Gölcük Denizgücü for one season .

After military service, Hamamcıoğlu went to Sarıyer GK in the Second Turkish Football League in 1967 . He played there for 13 seasons and retired from football in 1980. Hamamcıoğlu played in a total of 483 games for Sarıyer GK and scored 165 goals. He is currently the third national record player for Sarıyer GK

He was the top striker in the Turkish Second Football League four times. Many first division clubs tried to sign him for their teams, but Garo stayed with Sarıyer GK Hamamcıoğlu until his retirement from football at the age of 35, also briefly playing for Taksim SK in the Istanbul amateur league after he had undone his withdrawal from football .

Association chairman

After he retired from football again, Hamamcıoğlu returned to Taksim SK as a manager. He is the chairman of the club.

activities

Garo Hamamcıoğlu was also co-captain of the Turkish-Armenian squad at the Pan-Armenian Games.

He is a peace activist and works to improve relations between the Turkish and Armenian people .

However, he opposed the French Senate's draft law , which made denial of the Armenian genocide a criminal offense.
