Mustafa Kocabey (born October 6, 1974 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish football player . He was three-time top scorer of the TFF 1st Lig , which he in the seasons 1995/96 , 1998/99 and 1999/2000 . Although he was only active for Galatasaray Istanbul for two years , he is associated with this club as a native. Due to his position and his playful and physical resemblance to the then very popular French star striker Jean-Pierre Papin , he was known as Papin Mustafa from the beginning of his career . With his second division he is one of the most successful second division hunters in general and one of the most successful of the second division times of the 1990s and 2000s in particular.

Career

society

Kocabey was born in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul as the son of a family from the central Anolian city of Sivas . Here he began his club career as a ten-year-old at the traditional Istanbul club Galatasaray SK and was traded as a great young talent from an early age. In the youth national teams and the youth department of Galatasaray, he formed a successful team with his later teammates Okan Buruk and Cengizhan Hınçal , both of whom should also make professional careers. In 1990 he was discovered for the Turkish national youth teams and from then on was one of their permanent players. With the Turkish U-16 national team, he took part in the French St. Briench tournament and was subsequently described by the French soccer magazine eurofoot as a great talent and named the most hopeful player of the tournament. After Kocabey won the U-18 European Football Championship in 1992 with the Turkish U-18 national team and he was a key player in this success, he was all the more targeted by the Turkish sports press. This also increased general expectations of him.

In the summer of 1992 Galatasaray had just hired a new coach, Karl-Heinz Feldkamp , and wanted to carry out a revision in the squad with him. Feldkamp turned the team inside out, sorted out many seasoned professionals and replaced them with new players. Kocabey was one of the new players with whom Feldkamp created his new team. After Kocabey had taken part in the pre-season preparation camp, he remained without a mission for the first three game days. Feldkamp tried other strikers like Tayfun Hut and Şevket Candar . In the game against Aydınspor on Matchday 4 , Kocabey von Feldkamp was placed in the starting line-up and made his professional debut with this encounter. In this encounter, Kocabey also scored the goal for his team's 1-0 victory. After Kocaybey was only substituted on in the next game, he played in the game against Bursaspor on matchday 6 from the start. In this encounter, in which Galatasaray fell behind twice, Kocabey managed a hat trick . He equalized twice for his team and with his third goal the final score 4-2. After that game, Kocabey was named by Feldkamp as his new striker. His achievement was hailed by the trade press as the breakthrough he had hoped for. Through this performance he was elected to the team of the game day. Together with his strike partner Hakan Şükür , who had also joined the team at the start of the season, he was described as the best Turkish striker duo. After this game, Mustafa remained an integral part of the team for several game days, but could not repeat his performance against Bursaspor. He did not play any of the four subsequent full-length games. It was not until the UEFA Cup match in the third round on December 9, 1992 against AS Roma that Kocabey played the full distance again. In this encounter he scored two of the three goals of his team and thus had a large share in the 3-2 victory of his team. He was named Man of the Match by the Turkish trade press and referred to as the new Metin Oktay , as the new legendary striker of Galatasaray. After he was used regularly until the end of February 1993 and also scored several goals, he lost his regular place and remained without stakes for a long time. During the winter break, Galatasaray had strengthened themselves with the German striker Torsten Gütschow , and Arif Erdem , who Feldkamp had already written off, fought for more stakes, so that both games ousted Kocabey from the team. Only on the last day of the season Kocabey came back to play. At the end of the season, the team under Feldkamp immediately became champions of the Süper Lig , winners of the Turkish soccer cup and winners of the Turkish soccer supercup . Kocabey was together with Gütschow with 10 league goals behind Hakan Şükür, the second most successful goalscorer of his team, with Şükür scoring 19 goals. In June 1993 he was awarded a professional contract with his two friends Okan Buruk and Cengizhan Hınçal.

In the 1993/94 season he managed to defend the championship title with his team. In the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League season, the big favorites Manchester United were thrown out of the competition in the second round and qualified as the first Turkish team in the newly designed UEFA Champions League . In the summer of 1993 Galatasaray strengthened with the Swiss national striker Kubilay Türkyılmaz , who quickly conquered a regular place. In addition, Reiner Hollmann , Galatasaray's assistant coach from the previous season, replaced Karl-Heinz Feldkamp as head coach. Kocabey enjoyed the goodwill of the new coach and received, e.g. Partly due to the injury-related loss of Türkyılmaz, regular games throughout the season. In these missions, however, Kocabey did not manage to retrieve his last year's performance and remained goalless in his 13 league appearances. Only in his four cup appearances he managed one goal each against the second and third division clubs Denizlispor and Büyükşehir Belediye Erciyesspor .

In the summer of 1994, Galatasaray tried to sign striker Saffet Sancaklı from league rivals Kocaelispor . Finally, Galatasaray agreed with Kocaelispor for a transfer of 35 billion Turkish lira and the levy of the two Galatasaray players Cengizhan Hınçal and Kocabey. Although Kocabey did not want to change, he was persuaded to change by the then Vice President Adnan Polat . He assured Kocabey that he would have a buyback option for him at Kocaelispor and that he wanted to bring him back after one season.

After switching to Kocaelispor, Kocabey did not succeed in establishing himself as a regular player. After he was only used twice until mid-October 1994 and remained without a goal, he was given to the second division club Çanakkale Dardanelspor . At his new club, he immediately established himself as a regular player and became the club's most successful goalscorer with 22 goals this season. Although he had only played from the 10th day of the second division season 1994/95 , he was third on the scorers list. With his team he made it to the semi-finals of the playoffs and was eliminated here against Aydınspor . In the next season, the 1995/96 season , Kocabey continued his services and was the top scorer of the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi with 26 goals . His team finished the season as champions of the 2nd league and thus rose to the 1st league for the first time in the club's history .

After promotion to the summer of 1996 he remained loyal to Dardanelspor and returned with this club in the top Turkish league. After playing three game days for Dardanelspor, he moved to Istanbul's first division club Zeytinburnuspor shortly before the end of the transfer period . With this club he got 10 goals by the end of the season, which he expanded with a total of eleven first division goals by one goal. Since his club missed relegation as the bottom of the table, Kocabey went with Zeytinburnuspor in the 2nd league. In the 2nd league, Kocabey remained the most successful goalscorer of his team and scored 20 goals this season.

Since Zeytinburnuspor missed the direct return to the 1st Lig in the summer of 1998, left this team after expiring club and hired the city rivals Kayserispor . At this club, Kocabey immediately established himself as a service provider. By the end of the season he scored 31 goals, setting a new career record and winning the top scorer's crown in the 2nd league for the second time in his career. His team played for a long time for direct promotion and missed it. Instead, the club qualified for the playoffs in which the last climber was played indirectly. Here they were eliminated in the quarterfinals against Yimpaş Yozgatspor .

At the end of the season he left Kayserispor and moved within the league to Yimpaş Yozgatspor. Also with his new employer, where he met his former teammates Yusuf Tepekule , Cihat Arslan and Cengizhan Hınçal from his Galatasaray days, Kocabey had a very successful debut. He scored 32 goals by the end of the season, continued to build his career record and was top scorer in the second highest Turkish league for the third time. His team reached the championship of the league and thus the promotion to the highest Turkish league, which was renamed from 1st Lig to Süper Lig in the summer of 2000 . In the Süper Lig Kocabey contributed to the fact that his team was the surprise team of the first division season 2000/01 . Under the leadership of coach Hüseyin Kalpar , the club finished the league in 7th place in the table and provided several surprise victories, such as the win against Galatasaray. Kocabey contributed eleven goals to this success, making him the club's most successful goalscorer. Yozgatspor started the new season with a change of coach. Under the new coach Bahri Kaya , Kocabey immediately lost his regular place, but came to regular appearances as a supplementary player.

In the 2001/02 winter transfer period, Kocabey left Yozgatspor after two and a half years and moved to Samsunspor within the Süper Lig . With this club he only stayed until the end of the season and returned in the summer of 2002 by moving to Konyaspor to his usual place of work, to the second highest Turkish league. At this club he did not succeed in using his usual second division performances, so he moved to Vestel Manisaspor during the winter break within the league . At Manisaspor, too, he stayed well behind his usual second division performance with four goals.

In the summer of 2003 he returned to his old club, the second division club Dardanelspor . Here he regained his old form and scored twelve goals in 13 games by the winter break. After this performance he signed Kayseri Erciyesspor . At Erciyesspor he could not continue his form high and scored only three goals. With this club he became runner-up in the Turkish 2nd league at the end of the season and thus rose to the Süper Lig . After this promotion, the club exchanged its competition rights with the partner club Kayserispor and continued to play in the second division for the coming season. After this promotion, Kocabey was transferred to the new Kayseri Erciyesspor. For this club, Kocabey only played the first half of the season and again fell short of his usual performance.

In the winter break 2004/05 Kocabey returned for the second time to Dardanelspor . After he found his old form again during his last job for Dardanelspor, he did not succeed this time. At the end of the season he then left Dardanelspor and moved to the fourth division Etimesgut Şekerspor . In the fourth division, a patron was elected president and tried by recruiting stars to lead the club into the TFF 2. Lig and then into the Süper Lig . Among other things, stars like Kocabey were committed to the capital city club. Kocabey scored 28 goals at this club by the end of the season and was second on the scorers' list behind Taylan Eliaçık . His team went through the championship of the TFF 3. Lig in the TFF Lig B on. Kocabey was only kept in the squad after promotion and moved to his old club Dardanelspor in the first few weeks of the new season. The club played in the meantime in the third highest division, the TFF Lig B. For Dardanelspor he then played until the end of the season.

In the summer of 2007, Kocabey hired at the fourth division Beylerbeyi SK , the then second team of Galatasaray Istanbul . At this club, Kocabey was the top scorer in the TFF 3rd Lig with 24 goals and thus played a major role in the promotion of his team to the TFF 2nd Lig . After this success, Kocabey played one season in the TFF 2nd Lig for Beylerbeyi and then left the club.

From the summer he played in turn for the third division Turgutluspor , Balıkesirspor , Tokatspor and Tepecikspor . In February 2012 he signed with the amateur club Zara Belediyespor and from then on played in the regional amateur leagues. For the 2013/14 season he was hired by Adapazarıspor .

National team

Kocabey started his national team career on February 20, 1990 with an encounter for the Turkish U-16 national team. With the Turkish U-16 national team he took part in the French St. Briench tournament in the spring of 1991 and was subsequently described by the French football magazine as a great talent and named the most hopeful player of the tournament.

With the Turkish U-18 national team, he took part in the U-18 European Football Championship in 1992 and finished the tournament with his team as U-18 European champions. This performance achieved the best result of a Turkish national team in a major tournament to date. As the reigning U-18 European champion, the team had also qualified for the 1993 Junior World Cup . The Turkish team only arrived three days before the start of the tournament after a 32-hour flight with five connecting flights. As the reigning U-18 European champion, the team played in the first game with great expectations against the US U-18 national team. The team clearly lost the game with 0: 6. The other two games were also disappointing for the entire team, leaving the team with only one point in the group stage. Like his entire team, Kocabey delivered a disappointing performance.

In the summer of 1993, Kocabey took part with the U-18 national team at the U-18 European Football Championship in 1993 and reached the final. In the final, the team met hosts England. Against the English team, in which later stars like Gary Neville , Sol Campbell , Paul Scholes and Robbie Fowler played, the Turkish team lost 1-0 after a hard-fought final and became vice-U-18 European champions.

In 1992 he completed his first and only international match for the Turkish Turkish U-21 national team .
