The Chinese People's University (中国 人民 大学, pinyin Zhōngguó Rénmín Dàxué also German: University of the Chinese People , Renmin University ) is a university in Beijing .

history

The People's University goes back to the Shanbei Public College (陕北 公 学), which was founded in 1937 during the Sino-Japanese War . The school became North China University in Yan'an in 1947 , the orientation and faculty of which two years later formed the basis for the establishment of the Chinese People's University. Other educational institutions close to the communists were also integrated into the new university.

The founding of the People's University goes back to an initiative of Liu Shaoqi , who traveled to Moscow in 1949 and u. a. suggested that the Soviet Union establish an institution similar to the China Workers' University of the 1920s to train Chinese cadres. Stalin refused to found such a university in the Soviet Union himself, but agreed to send Soviet teaching staff to China to establish such a university there. Liu had suggested that the Soviets send two hundred specialists; in the end around fifty were sent. China People's University was formally established in October 1950, and Liu Shaoqi called on it to take the lead in adopting and adapting the Soviet experience to conditions in China. The group of Soviet specialists sent to the university from the summer of 1950 was the largest group of Soviet specialists at a Chinese educational institution in the 1950s. As early as 1950, 49 Soviet citizens were teaching at universities in Beijing, 37 of them at the Chinese People's University. From 1949 to 1959 a total of around seventy to eighty Soviet specialists taught at the People's University. From the summer of 1953 this number slowly decreased until only seven remained in 1956/1957. After that there were no more Soviet specialists at the People's University.

With its focus on social sciences, the People's University played a particularly important role in the subsequent development of China's educational system and was one of the country's first national universities. During the years 1973 to 1978 there was no teaching at the university due to the cultural revolution . After the universities reopened, the Volksuniversität was able to resume its position as the most important teaching facility for social and political sciences.
