Charles N'Zogbia (born May 28, 1986 in Harfleur ) is a French football player . The son of Congolese parents and a graduate of the AC Le Havre football academy usually plays in the left wing position in midfield , but occasionally also plays in the central attacking midfield position or as a left full-back .

Athletic career

Club career

Born in Normandy , Charles N'Zogbia grew up in the Parisian banlieue near the Stade de France and later joined the youth department of AC Le Havre . At the age of 17 he was discovered there by Charlie Woods, the former chief scout of Newcastle United , and was given the opportunity to do a trial training session. After about a month of joint training, he had convinced the sports management and was finally signed. To the transfer itself, however, a dispute developed between the clubs from Le Havre and Newcastle, as the French club saw him tied to a training contract and Newcastle insisted on N'Zogbias free choice of club. Although the world football association FIFA also supported Newcastle United's claims, a long-running controversy developed in connection with the threat of a legal dispute at the International Court of Sports , which ultimately ended with a compensation payment of around £ 250,000 to AC Le Havre. With the official signing of the contract on September 2, 2004, N'Zogbia was the last commitment of the then coach Sir Bobby Robson .

In Newcastle, N'Zogbia immediately became a permanent fixture in the club and became one of the audience favorites - he was later nicknamed "Zog" and his own speaking choir "Zog on the Tyne", based on a song by the local band Lindisfarne from 1971. His debut took place on September 11, 2004, which ended with a 3-0 win over Blackburn Rovers . In the 2005/06 season he was finally a regular player and completed a total of 41 games. He scored his first goal on September 10, 2005 with a free kick in a 1-1 draw at home against Fulham and was able to prove his scoring threat with a total of six goals in the season - including a goal after a remarkable solo effort at the 4th : 1 win against local rivals Sunderland FC on April 17, 2006. In the team ranking he was the fourth best goalscorer of the 2005/06 season and prepared seven more goals. Although this sparked the interest of larger clubs, N'Zogbia extended his contract with Newcastle United for three more years at the end of the season.

During the 2006/07 season , however, N'Zogbia found himself more often only on the bench, as the then coach Glenn Roeder preferred the Irish international Damien Duff on the left wing position . On December 13, 2006, he also suffered an injury in the 1-0 defeat by Chelsea , from which he did not return until late February 2007. For the last game of the season on May 13, 2007 against FC Watford , N'Zogbia was removed from the squad because he had previously refused to sit on the bench as a reserve player.

Despite existing rumors of change in the summer of 2007, N'Zogbia stayed at Newcastle United in the following years. Coach Sam Allardyce called him up for the first game of the 2007/08 season against Bolton Wanderers and scored the first goal in the 3-1 win. On September 4, 2007, he signed a new five-year contract. However, he did not fulfill this contract. In early February 2009, N'Zogbia moved to Wigan Athletic in exchange with Ryan Taylor .

A year before the contract was signed, he moved to league competitor Aston Villa in July 2011 , where he signed a five-year contract.

International career

N'Zogbia completed two games for the French U-16 team in 2002 and was appointed to the 24-man squad of the French U-21 national team for the upcoming European Championship in Portugal in the summer of 2006 . However, due to the continuous resentment between Newcastle, Le Havre and the French Football Association, the sporting management of the French youth team ultimately renounced him. After the good start to the 2007/08 season, he was then appointed to the U-21 team in September 2007. and celebrated his debut there on 7 September in a 1-0 win against Wales.

In the friendly against Norway (1: 2), he completed his first international match for the French national team on August 11, 2010 , before being substituted after 45 minutes.
