Nicolaas I van Eyck

Nicolaas I van Eyck (born February 9, 1617 in Antwerp ; † 1679 there ) was a Flemish portrait and genre painter .

Life

From 1632 to 1633 he was an apprentice to Theodor Rombouts . In 1641/42 van Eyck must have already been master of the Guild of St. Luke , since he registered apprentices. In 1642 he married and the marriage had two sons, one of whom Nicolaas II van Eyck (1646–1692) also became a painter.

In 1658 Nicolaas I became captain of the Antwerp Civil Guard. He painted genre pictures from the life of a soldier in the manner of Pieter Snayer . In addition to the military subject , however, he also dealt with religious content.

Today his paintings can be found in the Netherlands , Northern Italy and Austria .
