RedPhone was free software for the Android platform for encrypted calls. It uses ZRTP to establish an end-to-end encrypted VoIP connection for calls and its own protocol with a central server for switching. RedPhone is developed by Open Whisper Systems and released under the GPLv3 license. The app was replaced in November 2015 by the Signal app , which combines TextSecure with RedPhone.

technical basics

Encrypted RedPhone connections require the use of the RedPhone app or compatible software on both sides. Encrypted phone calls can be made with devices running the Apple iOS operating system if the Signal software is installed there. All calls are made via a connected WLAN or a mobile data connection.

In November 2015, Open Whisper Systems combined RedPhone with the instant messenger program TextSecure into one application, Signal .

Distribution and importance

RedPhone and TextSecure played a role in protesting communications during the rise of the Arab Spring . In the opening speech at SXSW 2014 , NSA investigator Edward Snowden praised Open Whisper Systems' applications for their ease of use.

reception

The Forbes Magazine described RedPhone as "one of the five essential tools for privacy".
