The competition started its new season on January 23, 1983 and ended on May 4, 1983. The championship was organized by the national association CBF .
At the end of the season, CA Juventus was able to celebrate the championship. The winners of the second round group matches qualified for the second round of the first division in 1983 . The four runners-up in the second round qualified for the round of 16. In this, the clubs joined twelve clubs, which were eliminated in the first round of the first division. The two finalists qualified for the first division in 1984 . They lost their places but in favor of CR Vasco da Gama and Gremio Porto Alegre , who would not have qualified for the 1984 championship due to results at the 1983 national championship.

In the first round, the 36 participants from the state championships were divided into six groups of six clubs each. All participants in their groups played once against all participants in a group. The group winners and runners-up moved into second.
The match between Coritiba FC and Operário FC (MT) on the last day of the group was not played because both clubs had no chance of qualifying for the second round.
Here the 12 qualified clubs of the first round met in four groups of three each. In the groups, all clubs competed against each other once. The best team in each group qualified for the second round of the first division in 1983 . The runners-up made it to the round of 16.
Due to the better result in the fourth round, the CS Alagoano moved into the final.

The participants in the final were qualified for the 1984 first division . However, the rules of participation for the 1984 championship have been changed.
