The Itumbiara Esporte Clube , usually just called Itumbiara , is a football club from Itumbiara , a city with around 100,000 inhabitants about 200 km south of the capital of the Brazilian state of Goiás , on the border with Minas Gerais . The club, founded in 1970, won the Goiás State Championship for the first time in 2008 . In 1979 the "Giants from the Valley", as the club likes to call themselves, once played at the highest level for the Brazilian championship .

1979 Itumbiara took part in the Brazilian championship for the only time so far. The club took 64th place out of 94 participants. In the 1980s, the club was able to qualify in four seasons for participation in the national second-highest performance level. The first major title was won in 2008 when Itumbiara defeated the record holder Goiás EC 1-0 and 3-0 in the finals of the Goiás state championship , the Campeonato Goiano .

In 2007 and 2008, Itumbiara was at the national level in the third highest division, the Série C, and made it into the 2nd phase.

For the 2009 national championship season, the now 31-year-old 68-time national player Denílson joined the club at short notice before moving on to Xi măng Hải Phong in Vietnam in June . Denilson was noticed as a dribble talent at the 1998 World Cup in France and then became "the most expensive player of all time" at the time.

Itumbiara has not qualified for national leagues since 2008. 2010 was relegated from the first division of Goiás.

The home stadium of the "Giant from the Valley" is the municipal Estádio Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira , usually just called JK for short . It is named after Juscelino Kubitschek , President of Brazil from 1956 to 1961, who went down in history as the builder of Brasília . The multi-purpose stadium, which opened in 1977 after only nine months of construction, has a capacity of 20,000 spectators.

For the opening game on October 12, 1977 against Vasco da Gama from Rio de Janeiro , which ended 0-0, 41,235 viewers came, which is a record to date.

Audience numbers

In the 6 games of the Série C 2007 the club had an average attendance of 2,850, appealing but not at the top, with admission prices averaging just under BRL 3 . The negative record was not quite reached when Itumbiara only attracted 18 viewers in an away game at Guará in the federal district. Two other games only had 16 and 13 viewers, respectively.

In 2008, the average attendance was only 1030 with only six games, which may have had something to do with the fact that the average entry price had risen to just under 7 BRL.

In 2007 and 2008 the exchange rate was around BRL 1.00 = EUR 0.33.
