The Campeonato Brasileiro Série B 1996 was the 18th season of the second football league in Brazil .

Season course

The competition started on 8. August 1996 its new season and ended on 8. December 1996 . The championship was organized by the national association CBF . At the end of the season, the União São João EC celebrated the championship.

The competition was held in four phases. The first round consisted of five groups of five clubs each. The three best in a group advanced to the second round. Furthermore, the best fourth placed of all groups came into the second round. In the second round , the sixteen clubs met in a knockout round. The third round with the eight winners was also played in knockout mode. The winners qualified for the final round, which was again played in group mode.

The group winner of the final round became champions. This and the group runner-up rose to the first division in 1997 . The three clubs in the final table at the bottom of the table were relegated to the third division.

Attendees

For the first time since his suspension because of a lawsuit against relegation at the end of the first division season in 1993 , América Mineiro was allowed to participate in the national competition again.

The actually qualified clubs América FC (SP) , Associação Ferroviária de Esportes , Grêmio Novorizontino and Bangu AC had to cancel for financial reasons. The clubs moved to Atlético Goianiense , SE Gama , ABC Natal and Joinville EC . The Barra do Garças FC was excluded for its national association due to debt. As a replacement for this, the AA Ponte Preta did not have to relegate to Série C.

In the first round, the 25 participants competed in five groups of five clubs against each other once in a return game. The top three clubs in each group advanced to the second round.

The final round was decided on the last group match day, December 8, 1996. União São João EC had to win their last game to be champions, but had to hope that América FC (RN) would not win their game. América would have been enough if União hadn't been victorious.

União won his game and America lost his, making União champions. In general, the last game of União against the Náutico Capibaribe is called the title game.
