The Divisão Especial 1989 was the 13th season of the second football league in Brazil .

Season course

The competition started its new season on August 18, 1990 and ended on December 16, 1990. The championship was organized by the national association CBF . At the end of the season, Sport Recife was able to celebrate the championship.

In contrast to the previous year, the league was reduced from 96 to 24 participants. The competition was held in three group phases and a final. All matches were played back and forth. Both finalists qualified for the first division in 1991 . The four worst group members from the first round were relegated to the Série C in 1991.

Attendees

Atlético Rio Negro Clube lost its eligibility to participate. The upcoming clubs America FC (RJ) and ABC Natal refused to participate, so that the Botafogo FC (SP) got the opportunity to participate.

20 clubs qualified by participating in the second division in 1989. Atletico Paranaense , Guarani FC , Sport Recife and Coritiba FC were relegated from the first division in 1989 . Atletico Paranaense and Sport contested the final.
