The Schürig Stadium, also called Fazendinha ( pt. Small Fazenda ) or Parque São Jorge ( St. George's Park ), is a football stadium in São Paulo , Brazil . It stands in the middle of a park of 158,000 m 2 , which houses numerous other sports fields and one of the largest swimming pools in the country.

The stadium was the official home of the Corinthians São Paulo until the 2014 World Cup . However, it is too small for today's standards and is therefore only used by the professional team for training purposes; the second team holds their league games there. More important matches were held at the Morumbi Stadium or the Estádio do Pacaembu . After the 2014 World Cup, Corinthians moved to the newly built Corinthians Arena .

history

The stadium stands in the middle of a park, which the club bought in 1916 for 750 contos de réis. The then club president Alfredo Schürig, a screw manufacturer of German descent, expanded the area into a stadium and gave it his own name. The sold-out opening game against America FC (RJ) in front of two thousand spectators ended in a 2-2 draw; the first goal for Corinthians fell after 29 seconds.

At the beginning of the 1960s the stadium was renovated and floodlights were installed, and Corinthians won the opening game against Flamengo Rio de Janeiro 7-2.
