The Estádio Cícero Pompeu de Toledo , also known as Estádio do Morumbi , or Morumbi for short , is a football stadium in the Morumbi district of the Brazilian city of São Paulo . The stadium is the home of São Paulo FC . The facility is named after Cícero Pompeu de Toledo, who was president of São Paulo FC from 1949 to 1958.

history

The first official game was played on October 2, 1960 against Sporting Lisbon . At that time, the Morumbi had a capacity of up to 70,000 seats, which was increased to 140,000 by 1970. The highest attendance was reached in 1977 when 138,032 fans attended a game between AA Ponte Preta and Corinthians São Paulo .

In 1994 renovation of the stadium began, which lasted until 2000. Various problems such as water ingress and cracks in the building made a renovation inevitable. Among other things, a new lighting system was installed and the stadium's security increased. Since then, the maximum capacity has been 80,000, with only 75,000 cards per game being sold for security reasons.

After renovations, the Morumbi has been offering 67,052 spectators since November 2013.

World Cup 2014

The stadium was intended to host the 2014 World Cup , including the opening ceremony and a semi-final. On June 14, 2010, however, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) announced that the Morumbi Stadium would not be used at the World Cup due to a lack of financial guarantees to modernize the stadium. Instead, the World Cup matches were played in the Corinthians Arena , which was completed in May 2014 and had 68,000 seats at the time.
