Lance writing

The word " lance writing " ( Chinese  殳 書  /  殳 书 , Pinyin shūshū ) describes a Chinese script from the Qin dynasty that was used for inscriptions on weapons, especially on lances . It is one of the eight fonts ( Chinese  八 體  /  八 体 , Pinyin bātǐ ) of the Qin dynasty, which were established by Qin Shihuang .

"Lance" ( Chinese   , Pinyin shū )

The Chinese word shū (殳) referred to a lance made of bamboo or wood.

Eight Qin Dynasty Fonts (Overview)

The Shuowen jiezi lists the following eight fonts ( Chinese  八 體  /  八 体 , Pinyin bātǐ ):

  • Large seal script ( Chinese  大篆 , Pinyin dàzhuàn )
  • Small seal script ( Chinese  小篆 , Pinyin xiǎozhuàn )
  • Kefu script ( Chinese  刻 符 , Pinyin kèfú ) (made of carved characters)
  • "Insect writing " ( Chinese  蟲 書  /  虫 书 , Pinyin chóngshū )
  • Moyin seal script ( Chinese  摹 印 , Pinyin móyìn )
  • Official script ( Chinese  署 書  /  署 书 , Pinyin shǔshū )
  • Lance script ( Chinese  殳 書  /  殳 书 , Pinyin shūshū ) (for weapons)
  • Lishu - Chancellery script ( Chinese  隸書  /  隶书 , Pinyin lìshū ) (the chancellery script of the Han period)
