Walter Casagrande Júnior , better known as Casagrande (born April 15, 1963 in São Paulo ) is a former Brazilian soccer player and today's television commentator for Rede Globo . He was also one of the football players who campaigned for democracy during Brazil's military dictatorship in the 1980s.

Career

Walter Casagrande comes from the youth department of Corinthians São Paulo , where he also played several times during his career. In 1980 he received his first professional contract there and then played until 1986 with the Brazilian clubs AA Caldense and São Paulo FC . This was followed by the first move to Europe to the Portuguese club FC Porto , where Casagrande was able to celebrate winning the European Cup in the end , but due to the lack of a regular place, had no significant share in winning the trophy. In 1987 he therefore moved to Italy to Ascoli Calcio , who had recently won the Mitropa Cup. At Ascoli, Casagrande was very successful and scored many goals. In 1991 he went to league rivals FC Turin , which had also recently won the Mitropa Cup . At the end of his first season with Turin, he was with the team in the UEFA Cup final against Ajax Amsterdam , which was lost. A year later the Coppa Italia was won .

After the successful years in Italy, Casagrande returned to his native Brazil in 1993, where he initially hired at Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . A year later he moved again to his youth club Corinthians. In 1995 and 1996 he played for Paulista FC and AA São Francisco before retiring.

National team

For the Brazilian national team Casagrande ran a total of 19 times from 1985 to 1986 and scored 9 goals. Among other things, he was part of the squad for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

politics

Walter Casagrande was one of the most politically active football players in Brazil in the 1980s. At the Corinthians 'workers' club, a movement called Democracia Corinthiana emerged , which voted democratically on all internal affairs, while Brazil as a country found itself in the middle of a military dictatorship. The leaders of the movement were the midfielder and political critic “Doktor” Sócrates , the communist and left-wing defender Vladimir and the then young Casagrande. They also formed the basic political concept of another movement, the “Diretas Já” , which ushered in the end of the military dictatorship. During the two championships in 1982 and 1983, Casagrande and the Democracia Corinthiana repeatedly used the football field to demonstrate their political views, for example to wear jerseys with the slogan “Democracy Now”. But the young Casagrande was the youngest and weakest link in the movement, representing the liberal youth of Brazil. Like his teammates, he lived in isolation in a hotel for his own protection. After winning the championship, Casagrande thought that the dictatorship could no longer harm them. But in a careless moment he was attacked by the police and arrested. On the way to the police station, numerous state media were informed that were supposed to publicize the arrest of Casagrande and initiate the destruction of the Democracia Corinthiana . However, in the absence of evidence, he had to be acquitted. Nevertheless, Casagrande's public image is shaped by this incident to this day.

Others

  • After a serious car accident, Casagrande was brought unconscious on September 22, 2007 to the intensive care unit of the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo. A few days later he was transferred to a rehabilitation clinic for drug addicts. It was only after almost two years that Casagrande returned to television and from July 2009 commented on football games again.
  • On April 22, 2013, he confessed to presenter Jô Soares on the Brazilian late night show Programa do Jô that he had doped several times during his time in Porto .
