Leonardo Valencia , full name Leonardo Felipe Valencia Rossel (born April 25, 1991 in Santiago de Chile ), is a Chilean football player . The striker played for Brazilian club Botafogo FR from August 2017 to December 2019 . Before that, he only played for Chilean clubs. He has been active for the Chilean national team since 2016 .

Career

societies

Valencia played in his youth at the capital club CF Universidad de Chile and received his first professional contract there in 2008. However, it was initially awarded to the lower-class club Deportes Melipilla , where it was only used once. After he was loaned to Unión La Calera in 2011 and was used once, he got a new contract there for 2012 and made 34 league games. In 2013 he made a free transfer to league rivals CD Palestino , for whom he has scored 23 goals in 80 league games so far, but was also awarded in between, including to his home club Universidad de Chile. With Palestino he was able to win the Apertura 2014, scoring two goals each in the two finals, which were won 3-1 and 6-1 against Santiago Wanderers . With the final victories, the team was qualified for the 2015 Copa Libertadores . In this, the team prevailed due to the away goals rule against Nacional Montevideo , but then dropped out after the group stage, in which he was used in five games and scored one goal. In the Clausura, the team then paid tribute for the double burden and only finished 19th.

In March 2015 he was in the final of the Copa Chile for the first time with Palestino , but lost it 2: 3 against CD Universidad de Concepción . Things went better in December 2015 when he was again in the Copa final with Universidad de Chile, this time winning against Colo Colo and by penalty shoot-out , where he was one of the successful shooters. In October he had already won the Supercup against Universidad de Concepción with Universidad de Chile.

With Universidad de Chile he competed against CA River Plate in qualifying for the Copa Libertadores 2016 . After a 2-0 away defeat, in which he was not used, the 0-0 in the second leg was not enough to reach the group stage. Things went better with Palestino in the Copa Sudamericana 2016 , but again it was an Argentine club that ended the game, this time in the quarter-finals against CA San Lorenzo de Almagro , where his goal to win 1-0 in the second leg was not enough to make it 0 : To make up for 2 defeats in the first leg. In the Copa Sudamericana 2017 he lost the home game with Paletino 1-0 against Atlético Venezuela in March 2017 , but in the second leg in Caracas in May they also won 1-0 and then the penalty shoot-out 7-6 , whereby he was the first shooter to succeed.

For the 2017/18 season he moved to Brazil to Botafogo FR . After 80 games for Botafogo, he returned to his homeland in January 2020, where he received a contract with Colo Colo .

National team

He made his first appearance for the Chilean national team in a competitive match on October 6, 2016, when he was 3-0 in World Cup qualification against Ecuador when he came on in the 74th minute. His second appearance followed on November 16 when he was substituted on for Arturo Vidal , who was threatened by yellow and red, in the 58th minute in a 3-1 draw against Uruguay . Further appearances followed in January 2017 at the China Cup, to which Chile had come without most of the regular players. In the semi-final against Iceland he was in the starting line-up for the first time, but was substituted in the first minute of stoppage time. In the final against Croatia , which used 12 players for which this was the first international match and which Chile won after a 1-1 draw on penalties, he played over 90 minutes, but was not needed in the penalty shoot-out.

On June 2, Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi nominated him for the 23-player squad to represent Chile at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup . He then came to other missions in the preparatory games against Burkina Faso and Romania . Against Romania he scored the 2-0 lead with his first international goal, but his team lost 3-2. However, he was substituted at 2-1 in the second half.

At the tournament in Russia he was substituted on in the first group game against Cameroon in the 64th minute when the score was 0-0. His teammates then scored two more goals, so that the tournament started with a 2-0 win. But then he was only used again in the final against world champions Germany when he was substituted on in the 53rd minute when the score was 0: 1. But he couldn't turn the game around either. In the following World Cup qualifiers lost against Paraguay and Bolivia , he was only substituted on against Bolivia. The Chileans ultimately missed the World Cup with a 3-0 defeat on the last day of the match against record world champions Brazil.

He was not nominated for the Copa América 2019 .
